nice Bimota Honda @ imola
« on: October 13, 2010, 02:29:25 PM »
regretfully, didnt make it at the end.... at the first fuel stop on the way down to imola found out that the rear tire in my VFR was down to the cords, no way it was going to do the 300 miles round trip.... damn

first, a nice video of a rare HB Bimota,

tons of other imola 200 videos on the right if you click on the video and open the youtube page

some good pictures here:

Too bad you couldn't make it TG. (better keep closer tabs on those tires dude  ::))

Thanks for the link, among all the faces it was good to see Steve Baker. Not that we raced together, but we raced at the same time & place on occasion, nice fellow. I haven't seen him in thirty five years!

Hey Joe, this one was nice, sounds like an old Norton with 180 crank and DOHC ;D ;D ;D

Does the crank spin in reverse in it. Look at the torque reaction on the rear end when he blips the throttle right near the end of the clip.

that one is called a paton and indeed it has a gear primary so wouldnt be surprised if engine turns backward,

only 70K euros and you'll have some change left :)

I know what it's called Yo, did you forget how old I am. ;D ;D ;D ;D
They were fantastic bikes but about as much use as an ash tray on a motorcycle. :D :D :D
A local bike shop sponsored the factory and brought the bikes and Angelo Bergamonte over for the TT a couple of times.
In 67 Angelo rode a 250 and 500, both DNF. A guy named (I think) Terry Walker rode the 350 and also scored a DNF.
In 68, Billy Nelson had a DNF and Angelo finished 19th in the 350 race and had another DNF in the 500.
A little bit fragile I think.  ::) The sponsor was a motorcycle dealer named Bill Hanna.
Like the Bianchi, they sounded fantastic-o ;)

old? c'mon.... what should i say then?

Nice stories, when you think about it, DNF'ing was so much part of racing back then, Everything was a bit of  hand grenade no? until honda came along that is :)

oil tight manxes and G50's? non exploding patons? nice to see what 40-50 yrs of development and modern materials have done for these bikes.

They might have blown up a few times but they sounded awesome, not quite Honda fourish but not bad for a bike turned out from a shed in the garden workshop. ;)

TG, sorry that you didnt make it to imola. ev next year, there will be held an 4h endurance race, similar to spa.

some of my 200 miglia impressions:
both bikes, my egli replica and my endurance guzzi suffered some minor damages from rijeka, the race a few days before. oil on the racetrack (rijeka) made my rider crash both bikes, thats racing.
but both bikes had been raceready in imola.

the event was fine.
first day rainy, but the following two days fine.
a lot of superbe bikes, many only for static display, some for serious racing. ago, christian sarron, lucci, kenny (lapping in 2.17min)....and many more old cracks.
a lot of spectators, the pitlane was full with enthusiasts for classic bikes.

my personal mind:
the event is way overdone. too much bureaucratic stuff which prevents having fun on the track. every class had 3 times 20 min tracktime a day. the rest of the day was filled with lambretta/vespa parades or superstars parades. not was i am really interested in.

entering the paddock took some hours. we had to stand in line for administrative checks, for  pit access, scrutineering, breefing. my suggestion: administration and pit access can be done online days before the event.

completely contrary the GTF event: no unnecessary VIP presentations and such elitary stuff, but plenty of time on the track.

OK, I can imagine :) . Sometimes the very official/bureaucratic Italian way of doing things can really suck, and it gets worse when you have all sorts of VIP's involved  :P I try to avoid this type of thing whenever i can...

Can assure you that our regular vintage races are not like that.
