Get a load of this...
« on: March 09, 2006, 08:47:27 AM »
...so theres this cute little 360 for sale on Ebay...its in my town.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4619548245&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

My mom wants a smaller bike to scoot around town on, so I figure this will be perfect for her.  Heres my correspondence with the seller...

Q-...can I get your number, I'd like to stop by and take a look at the bike this weekend...thanx...

A-Thanks for your interest, but one reason for putting on ebay,as opposed to local ad, was not having to deal with showing to people who may or may not be serious ,or just curious. If you are ready to bid and would like to ask questions I would be glad to email answers or any pics you might need,or leave your number and some info about you and I will contact you.I will not consider offer outside of ebay.

Q-This is a serious inquiry. It looks like you have done a good job on the bike, but I could not buy the bike without looking it over first and taking it for a ride. If thats not acceptable then simply disregard this email. I live and work here in BR. My cell is 225-xxx. If I can come check out the bike this weekend, please give me a call. Thanx...

Hmm...my number and a little about me...well, I'm a Virgo, uhh...and I like long walks in the park.  Jhezz...its a Honda not a Lamborgini!!!   ::)

Gee with a response like that, I would almost say something happened to the bike which is not shown in the pics that he does not want people to know about till it is too late. Or he could be trying to get more than the bike is really worth.

...yea, I was thinking with his response the reserves is probably more than I'm willing to pay.  I was thinking 800 is as high as I would go...

People put stuff on eBay if they are greedy.  The whole "bid" system is designed to get people fighting amongst themselves and driving up the price of an item.

If someone is really serious about selling something, they place an ad, set a price and take it.

The exception is people who have stuff and don't know what it's worth.  These people need to place ads and ask whatever they think it's worth and just see what it gets them.  Ask too much, no one will buy it, ask too little and by the grace of God, I'll find it and buy it.

PATIENCE, you will find the right item, and if you don't feel comfortable about this one,
you are probably right. Spring is coming, and there will be more out there.

...I don't think hes greedy, just trying to get his money back out of it.  The guy called me at lunch...nice dude.  Hes a 70 year old retired mechanic and restored the bike as a project.  I told him 8 or 900 was what I was thinking, and he said he had that much in the resto alone (new tires, exhaust...)  I didn't have the heart to tell him he wasn't getting his money back... :-X  He said if he couldn't back the money he put into it, plus a little for his labor he'd just keep it.  It will sit in his garage til he dies, then go for 8/900 on Ebay 5 or 10 years from now when he leaves it to his kids, and they sell it as part of the estate.  The bikes are a labor of love...if you fix them up thinking you'll get something for your "time" I think you'd be mistaken...

I'm just saying that eBay makes it that much harder to find the badass deals.

...if nothing else it levels the playing field.  Put anything on ebay with no reserve and start the bidding at 99 cents and its true value will be revealed.  Call it globalization for the masses...

the best deals are from people who make typos. No one can find them and they are yours for the taking. Well iff you happen to make the same typo that they did. Or stumble onto it by accident. ;D

I’ve found buying parts for my project on US ebay costs me less than the same parts on UK ebay even after paying the shipping. I think each country still has a max value for stuff and the US is the bargain place for parts and bikes...... I still hate using ebay though. ;D

it just pains me that folks put a lot of money into these bikes then think they are harleys when they go to sell them.

I don't want a level playing field.  I want folks who have no clue what they have selling it to me.  I don't purposefully take advantage of people, but if a sweet deal drops in my lap, I don't argue.  He's asking what he would be comfortable with and I would gladly pay it.

What sucks is that junkyard owners are getting smarter and the days of walking into a junkyard and paying $75 bucks for a shopping cart full of "Old motorcycle parts" (K0 sidecovers, smooth oil filter covers, short chainguards, early gauges, ducktail seats, etc) are done.

People put stuff on eBay if they are greedy.

Possibly one of the silliest comments I've read here. Ebay's real beauty to most sellers is it that provides a world-wide advertisement for their products/parts for very little money. To achieve the same result you'd have to spend enormous reserves of money and time trying to advertise a product elsewhere.

When I was making oil cooler adapters for Suzukis I created my own web-page and maybe got a couple of hits a week, but now I just put my kits on Ebay, and get hundreds of hits in seven days!

I buy heaps more parts than I sell, and sure, sellers are getting smarter and parts are getting more expensive, but they're still a damn side cheaper than those crooks behind the counter at my local dealers try to extort from me, even with horrific international shipping! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

True parts from dealers are a rip, but the face-to-face deals are nearly gone because people just put it on ebay and let the sharks frenzy.

A part that is worth say $500 and which you might be able to track down for about $100 if you hunt, all of a sudden goes for over a grand because some guy JUST GOTTA HAVE IT!!!!  And now all of a sudden, other people selling similar parts go, "Holy crap, I have a gold mine here", and start charging based on that.  Good luck ever finding that part for $500 or less ever again.

I wonder how many, including members here, who were auctioning something on eBay, would turn down some bidder because he was offering too much?  ::) It's a matter of perspective, just depends on if you are the buyer or the seller.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I understand both sides. However, prices rise to meet demand. As many of these parts are no longer made, they get rarer and more people are hunting for them. Once a part is found, good luck on being the only one to need it. The price will go up no matter how the item is advertised. As a seller, you always want to get as much as you can on a sale. Thats they way it has been forever and will always be that way. Doesnt mean a person has to like it, just the way things go.

I for one sell parts on e-bay from the left overs from restro'"s i have completed.I dont gouge people, just try to recoop some of the money i spent and offer a good deal on a very usable part.Sadly not all evil-bay sellers are true in their selling practices.

As far as selling a bike you have fixed up or restored.I agree you will never see the money you have put into it,You could even buy the bike cheaper than  the cost of resto"s but wheres the fun in that.I get a kick when i ride one of the bikes ive restoed and get a thumbs up.Because i know i am responsible for that bikes apperance and condition.

I actually like selling stuff on Ebay, it's much more convenient for me than waiting for the two swap meets worth attending here each year, and it's been my experience that swap meets are really only good for garage clean-outs when you don't care how little people are prepared to pay you, as long as you don't have to take it home again, ha ha!

With over 400 Ebay transactions, 80% of which are purchases that I've made, I'm happy to be a part of the whole Ebay experience, and I hope Ebay continues to grow, for me it's the best thing that ever happened to my resto hobby! Cheers, Terry. ;D
