Brief Ride Report: Hoosiers ride to DT Cycles and beyond...
« on: October 12, 2010, 11:17:46 AM »
Hello Hoosiers:
I've got to get some more miles in this year or I have to change my handle from MCRider to MCAssembler.  ;)  So Dave Phipps says DT Cycles has some NOS Honda stuff. We passed the shop on Hwy 54 during our ride several weeks ago.

I can't stay out all day, but its supposed to be beautiful weather. If we meet somewhere on the SouthWest side of Indy, or Martinsville again 8AM , we can do some of the prior route in reverse. Martinsville to 43 to DT to 231 to  450 (that's really the destination  ;)) , N to bedford, then book home. back by 1PM.

Any takers?

Looking good for tomorrow AM. Any takers? If not I'll go it alone and bring back pictures from DT Cycle with an idea of his inventory. It'll be a rush ride, to get to DT, hwy 450 and home by 1PM for chores.

I rode down to DT Cycles Saturday AM. Sorry to say by myself, but happy to say i did it. (Forgot my camera, no pictures  :().

Left the house about 8AM, just after sunup. Still 40deg F. Got to wear my electric vest for the first time in years. (Haven't been riding much). Between that and the electric windshield on the mighty FJR, I was warm enough. Passed thru two pretty thick patches of fog south of Martinsville. Made me remember i don't like riding in fog. Fears of getting run into from behind. Left a chill in the bones too, turned up the vest.  :) Chill gone.

The leaves were about 1 week past prime. Lots of trees were bare. Still pretty nice, Highway 43 especially.

DT Cycles (dtcycle.com) Was on Hiway54. I originally thought it was on Hiway 58 where we had seen a sign, back on the trip we made on Sept 25th. Good thing I looked it up before leaving.

No sooner did i get parked and get my helmet off, proprietor Danny Todd who'd been standing in the parking lot talking to others, started up a conversation about how they used to ride year round, except when there was ice. He had a RD400 "cafe'd out" even put trials universals on it for the snow. even put studs on it for the ice but that was enough, got the car out.

Very nice guy, down homesy. The shop was well... for those of you who have seen cycle recycle Part II here in Indy, imagine that with real estate and out in the boonies. He had a semitrailer full of 50cc bikes, scooters and parts. In the main building, there was less room to walk than at CRCII and that's not much. His stock includes a lot of dirtbike oriented stuff with ATVs and watercraft scattered about. Stumbling around, shaking off the cold, and gettign an eyeful, I looked up and there on the pegboard were two CB750 cam cover gaskets.  I bot an inner tube I needed for a project just to justify the trip, and he had to climb over a stack of tires to get to the shelf where they were.

I asked him about SOHC parts, he said he had lots, but not for sure. said Dave Phipps told him to expect some SOHC visitors, I told him i was they. He said he just bot out a salvage yard in Martinsville and the city made him move everything before he had a chance to organize it "which isn't our forte anyway" end quote.  ;D Said he did have a CB750 hillclimber...somewhere. The attic is full of parts too.

So if you need something you have to call 812-825-3839, its all in his head, but i think his head is in good shape.

Not enough time to go further, I booked it on home, the day warmed up to a toasty 65 and I was home by 12:30 for chores. 180 miles RT.
