1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee question
« on: October 16, 2010, 09:01:00 AM »
Hi guys, at my Mom's for the weekend, and while I was outside I noticed a wire hanging down under my Mom's Jeep.  I crawled underneath to have a look, and it comes from the catalytic converter.  It used to be attached to what looks like a tiny spark plug device.  The wire is obviously broken (part of it is still attached to the plug-looking thingy) and was hanging down from the chassis somewhere.  It was looped over the drive shaft which has caused it to wear through the jacket.

I'm guessing this is some kind of sensor?  What are the implications of driving it without the wire attached?  Does it even need to be there?

Thanks in advance, Lenny.

That's more than likely the Oxygen sensor for the anti pollution system. Does her "Check Engine" light come on?

+1. It probably is the downstream Oxygen sensor that monitors catalytic converter efficiency. If there aint a check engine light yet, there will be.

+1 more. In Texas, you would not pass your vehicle's annual inspection w/checkengine light on.

Thanks for the relpies fellas, I just checked and the check engine light is on.  She's out of town for the weekend, but at least now I'll be able to give her a heads up when she gets back.

Thanks again, Lenny.

Try this:

1. reconnect wire to sensor [or replace sensor]
2. disconnect ground on battery for 1 min to reset CE light.
3. reconnect ground.

Good Luck
