Are you an organ donor?
« on: October 15, 2010, 02:05:14 pm »
When we get our driver's licenses, we are given the option to donate our organs upon death to folks that need them.

Hi all, I had a liver transplant at age 36, 11 years ago, i am extremely grateful every day that i got to see my children grow up and my life is pretty good. I got my transplant the day i was pulled off the transplant list, I was extremely sick {2% liver function, it wasn't producing blood any more}. After being in hospital for a year waiting and watching people die around me because of a chronic lack of organs i just wish everyone would donate, Your organs are  no good to you when you are gone and even if you think you need them for religious reasons they still rot into the earth once you die. Don't be selfish and give someone a new chance at life, it really is worth it..
Sorry for the rant guys but it is a subject pretty close to my heart, just too the left and down a little bit actually.... ;)

No, I wear a helmet..... ;)

I never paid much attention to organ donation until a friend of mine who was diabetic got sick and needed a liver & pancreas.
Fortunately, after waiting a year, she was able to receive a transplant.
It really was quite a miracle.

Yes, be an organ donor!

Yes.  I can think of no good reason not to.  I won't need them when I'm gone, but somebody else might.

With out a second thought.  I would never be so slefish, if I'm dead and haven't completely used up or messed up all the good bits ;) I would absolutely want to give someone else the gift of life.  Besides if I'm dead what am I going to do with them?

I said yes because I donate my organ to my wife all the time!!

I just loan my organ out, donating it does not have much appeal.

I have a little heart on my DL, if anyone can make use of my parts once my brain is gone, good for them.

I was a registered Bone Marrow Donor and Organ Donor. After having been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer I am disqualified. I guess they have to be super careful. Unfortunately I would probably be disqualified a a recipient also.

Why would you be disqualified as a recipient? Remember to make your wishes known to the rest of your families as a lot of donors never get to donate because family members over rule the decision, happens a lot here.....

yes, but I doubt there will much left, worth having, when I am done.

The orders have been given, what ever is left ( after they find out if there are any good parts worth harvesting) is to be cremated and ashes dumped on the sand pile at the nearest construction site.

Because if your going to waste what ever is left to bury me, I'll leave it to somebody that needs it

As a donor they feel rogue cells could be lurking and perhaps in check. The new person may not be able to keep them in check. As a recipient they consider former Cancer patients risky. Why give someone who could relapse some time in the future when you could give it to someone who has had no issues. I am a big believer in Stem cell research. Maybe heal a Heart, Kidney, Liver and who knows what else.

Yes, i understand the donor side of things as i am no longer allowed to be a donor but i had damaged kidneys and other significant problems as well but i still got my transplant. There are absolutely no guarantees in life and you may not even survive the transplant , so even if you only got a couple of years it would still be a success. I see no reason why you wouldn't qualify for a transplant in Australia....

Your organs are  no good to you when you are gone

That would exactly be my reasoning for being signed up.  (Also, that, and the fact that I did it the day I got my MC license at 17, just to watch my mom squirm...)

I never paid much attention to organ donation until a friend of mine who was diabetic got sick and needed a liver & pancreas.

...and, as a diabetic, my chances are much higher of being on the receiving than giving side...

MASTER of the upright organ... ;D  never got into the skin flute tho....  :P

I do have an endorsement on my license, since my first one at 16, me mum's a nurse..sortof a family tradition   ;)  She took it a step further, donated her body to a teaching hospital to be used as a surgical practice cadaver after all the good parts are gone. She's still currently using it tho... ;D

I selected the donor endorsement on my first license, also.
My youngest sister is now losing a battle with liver disease, and from what I have heard in the last week, she has been disqualified as a recipient. I may not be around here much, as I need to go home and help my mom....

Thanks for the moral support, guys; it helps more than you may realize. It just sucks, period. The worst thing is the effect it is having on my mom; no parent should ever have to see their child go through this. The feelings of helplessness are overwhelming sometimes....
