What do these covers, well , cover ??
« on: March 09, 2006, 03:55:53 PM »
Yo,

I bought these finned covers for my 1972 CB750k2 from a guy about two weeks ago.

I thought (was told) I was getting a points cover, which is what I really wanted. The seller said (via email) , that he would throw in another cover with the "points" for free, so I sent him the cash.

Just 5min ago I grabbed the covers to take them out to the garage to paint them black , and the holes on the smaller "points" cover looked kinda odd to me. Not being able to look at my bike (in storage still) , I checked a pic of my motor, and sure as hell the points cover on MY bike only has two mounting holes, not three  ::) And I am still not sure what the bigger cover fits, if anything..

Anyone know, from these pics, what these covers SHOULD fit ? They are of real good quality, and atleast I can sell them if i know what they are actually made for...

The cover with three holes is probably for the stator housing or clutch. Stator cover is around 4.75", clutch cover around 5.5".
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

This is the style I have for a clutch cover.
It is in my garage getting a "Few" coats of paint. ;D

Here's a thought. Is the bigger cover I have, with the two holes , the points cover ?
See this ebay auction ----> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHOPPER-CB-750-CB750-SOHC-CHROMED-FINNED-POINTS-COVER_W0QQitemZ4618435442QQcategoryZ35591QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Looks to be the same as I have, and just checked to see , and it is almost the exact size of the clutch cover I have.

I always thought the points cover was smaller than the clutch.
Kinda hard to tell without having the bike in front of me to look.....
?

The top pics are the stator cover (3 holes) The other pics (2 holes) are the points cover. When you put the stator cover on,you take out the 3 screws and put the cover on over where it says Honda. You will have to get slightly longer screws. I went to Home Depot and got allen head screws.

Thanks for the clearification. Wouldn't you remove the cover that says "HONDA" and replace it with the finned cover ?
Is it susposed to go on-top of the factory cover ? Have any pics of your setup so I can check it out ???
The other pics (2 holes) are the points cover.
I (with the help of CBJunkie) Figured out the larger of the two is indeed the points cover. It is in my garage with
the clutch cover getting painted as I type...

The three bolts hold the magnet inside the alternator cover, the circle with "Honda" is part of the alternator cover and is not removable. As Breeze says, it goes on top.

Gotcha !
If the three bolts hold on the magnet, I would assume that if all three are removed at the same time
the magnet will fall inside the cover ?

Hey Pro Teal,If you go into my gallery, you will see the first 2 pics... The right side and the other side. You can see all of the covers mounted. Don't think I have seen them painted black yet. Sounds cool. Put up some pics when ya' got em on. By the way, hows the 21 inch front wheel coming along? Thats what I really want to see.

Thanks for the pics, that motor looks killer !

I am painting the covers the same low gloss enamel paint that most everything else on the bike is getting painted with.
I plan to sand the top of the fins, so they will be bare alum. aginst the black background. Should look pretty sweet.

As far as the 21'' front wheel project goes, no status pics to show as of yet. The setup is at Dragman's house in Indiana, getting some loose ends taken care of. Should have entire front end, from 21'' wheel , dual calipers with cross-drilled rotors, polished lower legs, and internally lowered springs by the end of the month. Then all I need to do is mount my master cylinder I got off a Buell, get the right brakelines, and the front of the bike will be done... ;D

  ProTeal,
I know I'm not the only one waiting to see your bike's completion but, I am just wondering
how you're holding up not being able to ride it and all. I hope you have a backup bike to kind of keep
you pacified. :D ;) Keep up the good work, like the other guys, I'm wanting to the the results.

This Honda is the only bike I have at the momment. I did have a HD Roadking, but sold it not too long ago becasue I was bored with it, and never rode it.
Plus, I have the 55 to drive around - enjoy the weather , when the bike is down. I have a good plan of attack on the bike, to keep the downtime as short as possibile. Like I am building the entire front-end so I can remove the stock - and replace with the new in one whole shot.

Adding a cover will not effect anything...

3/10/06
Here is how the covers look , after a few coats of low gloss paint, and some sanding.
I need to do some more sanding of the fins, but you can get the overall idea..
They look kinda "rough around the edges" so to speak , but so does my bike  ;D

Here is a quick pic of DRAGMAN's handywork. He did this in his basement, and it turned out great !
I can't stress enough how much help he has been in my project, his knowledge, ability, parts inventory, etc... ;D
I can't wait to have these babies mounted to my new front end...

If you want to spend the $$$ , I am sure you could have a machine shop turn you out some
custom covers, then just have them chromed.
OR
Get ahold of DRAGMAN and see what his basement-o-parts has for ya.....
