Today I confirmed that the petcock on my 76-79 kz750 twin is the same thread size as harley has been using since 1975. Finding a good petcock for the KZ was a bit of a nightmare, as the twins are not nearly as common as the fours, but once I found this out.. well.. I got one for $5 off an 89 electra-glide. I know a petcock made for an 80ci motor will easily keep up with my 750.

The thread size is 22mm (not sure of the pitch offhand), and I read that some folks were using sohc cb750 petcocks on their kawasaki twins, so this might fit the CB too.

I dont know if this is news to anyone else, but it sure was to me, and very welcome news at that for a budget build. I hope it does you guys some good!

Thanks for that mate, I'll check it out! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

A great catch, thanks for sharing.  Now we just need someone to make an adapter for the early style tanks.... hmmm, 22mm if you can come up with the thread pitch I might be able to make one.... I'm subscribed.

my caliper says the threaded part of the bung is 22mm wide, and the thread gauge from my tap and die set says the threads are 1mm, making it a 22x1mm bung. I don't have any dies that go up that big, so I cant run a die on it, but I did the next best thing, hope that helps!

I can't seem to wrap my head around what style connection the petcock has to the tank...without seeing it.  BikeBandit isn't much help either with their blurry diagram. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1978-kawasaki-motorcycle-kz750-kz750b3-us-fuel-tank/o/m3964sch84275
Off to ebay to look for pics I guess, brb.

OH OK, its just male threads sticking out the bottom of the tank, understood.

roger that, male bung on the bottom of the tank, usually connected to a ruined petcock. Most used ones are equally ruined, I haven't seen much for NOS petcocks, and if you are going aftermarket.. why not get a much cheaper and easier to find one for a harley?

You got that right.  I doubt that the filter screen on those petcocks will fit the thru-hole on an early style CB750 tank though, I'll have to find some other before an adaptor materializes.
