Straight frame??
« on: March 08, 2006, 12:39:17 PM »
I have a bare 1969/1970 frame (the one in my avatar) that I want to be sure is straight before I start hanging everything on it. i bought it bare with a bunch of other stuff and don't know it's history. Are there some easy measurements I can confirm to see if it's straight or does it have to go on a jig for this? It looks straight to me but.... The "jig' shop is a 2 hour drive away and wants $100+ for this so any quick way to see if it's even close will help now.
Thanks,
Cliff.

I took mine to a bike builder and he did something with a piece of steel rod mounted in the steering bearing hole and a couple of chalk lines on the rear made after a couple of measurements . When you then looked from the rear to the front it became obvious it was out of alignment.

Not much of an answer, but try calling a bike shop if you don't get the answer here. I think it was something I could have done myself.

2nd post: I called him and he indicated it would be very difficult to describe on the phone. Here is his info, he's in Cowichan area. Not that far from you, and it only took a few mins.

Thanks Seaweb!
Is this guy that builds 750 sand racers? I've been wanting to meet him.

Yeah thats the guy, he's a bit rough around the edges but sure knows his stuff. He has a 750 frame straightening cage as well.  The only one around that I know of. I paid $400.00 if I remember correctly.   He has a lot of 750 parts as well, I bought a new clutch plate off him last year when I broke mine installing my new clutch incorrectly.

If you get up that way drop over to Gabriola and I'll show you the 350 project and buy you lunch at one of the Island pubs over here.

Sounds good about lunch and seeing your bike(s).
What did he charge you to check the frame? If he's not too expensive I may as well get him to do a '71 frame I have too.
