Which CB750 shift drum should I use?
« on: October 19, 2010, 03:44:16 AM »
Hi,

I bought an excellent condition 750K1 transmission from the USA (12k miles) for my '69K0 and the guy included the shift drum and forks. I also have a couple of the later modified shift drums as detailed in Service Bulletin see:

 https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://data.sohc4.net/SB750/750_40.pdf

Which one should I use? I don't have any experience on the shifting behavour of the 750 because I always rode 400/4's and my bike was a non-runner when I bought it. Does the later arrangement make a big difference?

I do have the necessary measuring equipment to measure the later drums if necessary.

Cheers

Ash

I would use the later modified drum. The 750s had a habit of popping out of gear under hard acceleration; perhaps this is why Honda modified the drum. Make sure you inspect the dogs on the gears for wear very carefully. If they are rounded off, they will need to back-cut.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
