What I don't understand is why does Wikileaks decide to "dump" this information when a considerable amount of it is benign gossip. Why not take stories like the one that srust58 opened with and actually do some serious investigative reporting? Instead, the story becomes about the "dump," not about the content. The content gets swept under the rug, American's grumble about it, and NOTHING is ever done about any of the corruption.
Honestly, it's a little frustrating that Assange wants to be taken seriously in his work, but the bulk of his work gets reported as news bites such as, "Sarkozy is a 'thin-skinned, authoritarian' man prone to making 'impulsive proposals.'" That's what's being reported, not the fact that we are funding a war and selling guns to people who are funding the people shooting at us. I think Assange is a bit arrogant and self serving. Instead of diplomatic gossip, blow some lids.
While Assange does have his issues like you state he does not have the resources to investigate these issues. Wikileaks is more of a conduit for the information provided by insiders or others. That's why it is difficult to go after him legally. He is putting it out there for the news organizations to do the investigative work but being the corporate shills that they are they no longer do that sort of thing unless it involves Bristol Palin on Dancing with the Stars. Even if there was an investigations of some of the issues exposed what would become of it? Americans as a whole have little interest in what their country does in their name around the world.
I enjoy the spectacle of politicians, CEO's, military top brass, diplomats, etc exposed with their pants down around their knees. Although they all scream "national security" when it happens the republic and the public still goes about their business without a hiccup. I think it's good for democracy and applaud what Assange has done.
Several days ago there was an editorial from a major newspaper in the Middles East that basically said " So what, much of this is not news to us. It's the ignorant and apathetic American public that seems so surprised and shocked by this".
