Trailer full of 70s era Honda's spotted today
« on: October 19, 2010, 01:39:39 PM »
I was driving home from work this afternoon on the North side of Indy when I spotted a large (24'?) box truck pulling a good sized trailer FULL of old Honda's.   :o  It was just entering the Interstate going the opposite direction when I passed it....but I could clearly see that many of the bikes were SOHC 750s and similar.  Just on the trailer there had to have been about a dozen.  IF the trailer was full, then one would assume that the box truck was as well.  Had I been on a two-lane road, I would have made a U-turn and followed it!  :)

I wonder where they were going?  Could it have been one of these outfits that go around buying up craigslist finds and exporting them?

I hope they are bringing them to Dallas.  We need a few more down here.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I wonder if it was the same guys that bought my 750. They buy a bunch of bikes and ship them back to japan. Kinda sad, really, but I needed the money bad at the time and they were the only ones that made a serious offer.

Could have been.  It was a big Penske truck just like that.  Interesting.

No doubt a driver for an affluent buyer/collector.  They may not be going overseas although many do.  We will see them again, $150 rats turned into $15K collector bikes. Something for everyone with these old bikes. It keeps the painters, platers, and assemblers in rent money. I have sold all over the world. Most notably to a soldier in a Humvee in Iraq that paypaled me and then sent his brother from Kentucky to come get the bike so he would have it when he arrived back in the states.

If the truck/trailer was westbound...........it could be michaelmotorcycles.com in St. Louis. He bought a trailer full of sohc/4s in Davenport over Labor Day and was in Birmingham at the Barber Festival.

Would think this is the start of the end of cheap old SOHC bikes, the current TV series is going to put the bug in allot of peoples heads that rebuilding an old bike might be a great thing to do. What your seeing or seen is the start of buy low, sell high...

Yeah...I can't help but think the same thing.  Makes me think I should hold on to my part-out bike for a few more months...but I need the space in the garage.

Makes me miss the day back in college, fall of 2001, when I passed on a very nice 1975 cb750 for $300.  I am still kicking myself for that dumb move.

I think you're right, and I think that the worst case scenario would be that as thing get trendy, demand goes up, people pick up the bikes, start projects, but don't finish them, and then when the trend passes there will just be lots of half finished projects on the market. Even if you're into riding and appreciate the aesthetic of old bikes, it takes lots of interest in the minutiae of internal combustion and willpower to build, let alone maintain these old things. That or it takes a thick wallet and a good bike mechanic.

That being said, I'm a newbie here, so maybe I shouldn't be pointing fingers and using words like 'trendy'

Yeah at the risk of opening a true shooting match, its like the peak oil thing. Back in the oil crunch of 1974 we had 10 years of reserves left. Here we are 36 years later with surplus.

The deep dark depths of sheds, garages and barns will put forth SOHCs for decades to come. IMO

They weren't all, nearly none, shredded and crushed. They are just...out there.  IMO   :D

That's right Luceja. No prob with the trendy part, your first part is correct i think. Best thing would be to get a bunch of half finished projects into the marketplace. Otherwise they may deteriorate to true dust. If that's even possible, I've seen rusty frames restored and can an engine truly be nothing more than scrap?

I happily await the day to find cool half finished projects that died due to bad grounds, uncleaned connectors, and bad jetting. Hold on, I forgot, I just got one.

I think it's Honda Corporate buying up all the vintage Honda bikes so there won't be any more need for David Silver Spares, and they can drop the lawsuit, and we'll be forced to buy new crotch rockets  :P  :D  :D

My point was not so much about whether there will be bikes left to be restored after all the dust settles,  more pointing to the fact of shrewed business people capitalizing on supply and demand issues that will be developing shortly.
Trends and patience for one day's rarely run on the same side of the street.
