1976 cb750f front brake pad replacement
« on: October 21, 2010, 01:11:59 PM »
The manual says to remove the wheel and the hose to replace brake pads. Is this necessary or can I just remove the caliper from the forks?

Just remove the caliper.  make sure that you support the caliper so that now stress on the hose.
I don't want it to go like a motorcycle, I want it to go like a rocket!

yep, what gregk said.  remove the two big bolts that hold both sides of the caliper to the caliper arm, and you'll be all set.  no need to remove anything else.

OR ---- Depending on the last time the piston was removed and all the gunk removed from behinfd the seal etc.,I think I would remove the whole caliper if possible, pull the piston and really clean things up fresh and new. That would be a good proper brake job on these old bikes  ;)

Thanks guys. Brakes started squealing last week when the brakes were applied and not. You know that obnoxious high pitched screech. Pads look good but the lever feels like garbage. Its Harvest Classic (vintage MC rally) weekend down here and altough she is definitely no trailer queen, I refuse to ride up with screeching brakes. Any suggestions why the aforementioned symptoms would suddenly occur? Pads need to be replaced, rotor need to be replaced, some type of adjustment I don't know about? Thanks again.

As mentioned when the inside of the caliper gets dirty the piston does not want to function and retract as well. Also when apart you could wet sand your disc with 400-600 grit wet/dry sandpaper with water and dress up the surface of your brake pad to de-glaze them.Maybe even cut a horizontal line through the pad to change harmonics and give dust an escape route.
