Is this hole on my primary shaft normal?

When I first removed the primary shaft from my '77 cb550 project bike I was surprised to see this strange looking hole:



At first I thought it was a worn out oil hole or something, but it seems like a strange spot for one. I couldn't find any pics of a good primary shaft and removed the one from my parts bike for comparison only to find a similar hole on that one as well:



Is this normal, and if so are either of these shafts any good?

Pefectly normal, it's an oil hole.
