Broke engine casing bolts
« on: October 24, 2010, 09:57:33 AM »
So, I snapped five bolts last night separating the cases on a CB400F.  Three of the large 12mm main bearing bolts, and two 10mm rear casing bolts.  The threads snapped even with the lower/upper half of the case, so I need to drill them out, which I'll be going to a machine shop for.  I need to find replacements though.  Anyone know where to get replacement main bearing bolts?  I'm talking about the ones that hold the casings together.

Thanks,
Camelman

I see there are three different sizes on the fiche for the large bolts around the crank area on the lower case. An 8by114, 8by97 and 8by60. and all unavailable from Honda. Hopefully another member has a  scrap engine around for them or you will have to start searching industrial houses for bolts of your size. Good luck on it.

Have you tried your local fastenal? I doubt they will have M8x97 or M8x114, but I bet you can get M8x100 and M8x115 and grind them down a few threads. They weren't able to help me out with the really long M6 flange bolts, but they had everything under 100mm for the most part.

Lucky me.  I found a set of exactly what I need on eBay.  Whew, nothing like trusting to providence... and having it pay off!
