Progress on Cafe CB750K2
« on: March 11, 2006, 04:04:20 PM »
This is a complete restoration on a  bike I bought in 1999 and was then stripped down (by a friend while he had it at his garage!) and now since last year is being reassembled by me into this cafe project. Needs front brake to be hooked up and Dyna S installed and chain. So far...lower engine has been split and gear bearing replaced. New wiring harness, polished controls, control panel, chrom headlight shell, polished covers, forks etc etc.....and seat is from German Ebay :-) Tank and sidecovers were on the K2 when I bought it in Maine in May 1999.

Cheers
Andy in Boston

Andy...The bike is looking great! Much more together than the last time I saw it. Are those the "new" pipes on it? You have to tell us about the bungee cord. Is it some kind of suspension upgrade? ;D ;D ;D

Thanks all I appreciate it. Not quite running yet but soon hopefully. And we`ll see if re-assembly of engine after splitting the cases has been a success  :-\. Yes Mike those are the "new" pipes rescued from a barn fresh CB750K6. Now just to assemble the front brake, put on the Dyna and fire it up. The bungee cord is holding the centre stand up since this is not going to be kept on the bike - only a temporary fixture :-)

cheers

I remember seeing several Suzuki GT380 and GT550 in England with a similar seat that was factory original. I also saw another on a CB400F. Very very nice K2, though I would've prefer to see yours fully stock and make your other CB750 cafe style but that's just me.

Thanks Ted but which other CB750 of mine would you make cafe? I already have a stock CB750K4 (see background bike in pic) and another k4 thats near stock - my long distance trip bike. This K2 was my first purchase in the States (from Maine) and needed everything done to it after lying in a friends garage for 3 years (and it got stripped of all its parts almost while I was back in the Uk).

Thanks for the input.
Cheers

I like to see the K2s in its original glory because it was the last year when CB750 had the classic looks. In K3, they added the more flashy tank stripes to compete with Kawasakis, Yamahas and Suzukis own fansy tank striping but in a process, the CB750 lost the classic look that made it unique. But back then, noboby was thinking about classics and keeping it stock. If it was me, I'd make your near stock K4 into cafe and make your K2 stock but like I said, that's just me. Your CB750 collection is great and keep up what makes you happy. I know that I'm happy with my own CB750s. I even converted one of my K2 to match the unique CB750 police bike shown in the WILD 7 animation, which has white gas tank with red K1 stripes and the original CB750 side covers in white with red-backing Honda 750 badge and it sported an all-red custom cafe seat similar to yours, but I also keep all the stock parts to make it silver or even the red, the latter is actually the original CB750 wrinkle tank that came from a spare CB750 parts bike!.

Hi Ted,
Well I agree with you of course about the classic look of the K2s and I really like this year. Ive had an F2 (1978 - owned from 1993 -1998), a K6 (trans-America trip 1991; and now both sold) and now 2 K4s and the K2 (1999 -present). The K2 will have a new colour soon - candy gold with black stripe - I have a spare tank and sidecovers that are getting painted as I like the current colour scheme of the tank in the pics too much to paint over it :-)

Id be very interested to see some pics of your bikes if you have some. I saw a white CB750 in Nagoya, Japan last summer and it had black pinstriping. It looked like an ex- police bike as it had the guards at the back of the bike as well. I saw it in the mornings a few times (what a commuter bike!) but never did get a photo of it. Im goig back to Nagoya in September so perhaps Ill see it again and get a pic this time....looked good in white I thought.

The white Honda CB750 was probably the actual police model that you mentioned. Early CB750 Police model used by Japanese Police were in white, including the frame and had a single seat. It was also equipped with CB450 Police type headlight/speedometer unit. I actually drew a CB750 profile section in my Tigers of Terra V2#4 comics more than 10 years ago that shows the difference between 1970 CB750 for Japanese Police and 1971 CB750K1 for LAPD.
I'll try to send some recent photos when I can. Meanwhile you can see the photos of my motorcycle collection in my Angels 750 motorcycle comics series, though the CB750 photos are 10 years old and recently was restored to full glory.
One of my favorite Japanese comics series, titled "750 RIDER", featured a CB750K2 with a non-stock red color. The series started in early 1970s and lasted over 10 years. When I get a chance, I want to do some CB750 dedicated issues. We'll see.
1969 Honda CB750, two 1970 CB750, two 1972 CB750K2, 1971 CB500, 1975 CB550, 1976 CB400F, 1968 CL450, 1973 CL450, 1974 CB450, 1970 1/2 SL350K1, 1971 SL350K1, 1972 SL350K2, 1972 CL350, 1972 CB350, 1983 CB1000C, 1976 Kawasaki KZ900A4, 1976 KH500A8, 1979 KZ400B, 1983 ZN1300, and so on and so on...

Hey Andy,

Lookin' good! What kind of bars are those, and where did you get them? They don't look like typical clubmans to me... or are they just placed in a more horizontal position rather than at a downward angle?

Thanks,
-Pat-

Hey Pat,
No they are not typical clubmans which i found a little uncomfy - these are Tomessellis (spelling??)  -Italian bars and I got them from a friend in Munich.....not sure where you buy them now....but they feel more comfortable from what i can tell...waiting for my chrome grips now :-)
