Have you considered a minitruck? I use the term loosely because there's no such thing as a small truck anymore.

I love my 2000 Ford Ranger.

It's a total piece of #$%*, but I still love it.

That being said, there's a reason that the F150 has been the best selling truck in America for 30 years.

It's your call....follow your heart ;)   If you're liking the 2000ish dakotas....GIVER'!!!

Just look it over well...and it may even be worth taking it to a shop for a thorough inspect.

All major brands are so well designed in competition these days...that you have a chance of getting a gem or a lemon from any of them.

Cheers!

I remember a time when 100000 miles on a vehicle was practically unheard of. I think that pretty much all of the trucks mentioned are a good bet if they have been taken care of. I have a 1999 Tahoe (Silverado platform) that I like, but wouldn't say that it's better or worse than the others. Had a 94 Dodge Ram and liked it too, but had to replace the transmission. Running great when I sold it. Check out the forums for whatever vehicle interests you.

I can't take it to a shop since l buy at auction courtesy of a dealer friend.  I'll have about 15 minutes to a hour to look it and a bunch of others over.  I'm pretty mechanically savvy with vehicles so if I can get time with it, I can assess it pretty well.  Time's just the bugger.

Late 60's to Late 70's Ford(owned 1968, 1970, 1972, 2002 F250PowerStroke ), if I could find one worth rebuilding for a daily driver or late 90's with the PowerStroke Dually-4spd-4x4. Can't comment on Toyota, I typically buy 1 tons or 3/4 tons and they don't offer anything with capacities even close to the domestics. If new, F Series, I like the 350. Fuel economy(diesel) for the towing capacity is far better than any other, domestic or transplant.

I have a 2004.4 Dodge HO Cummins Auto dually. 120k, owned since new. The engine/trans is unbeatable, fuel economy is 21 mixed, 22.5 highway. With my 4000# truck camper it still gets 18 mpg. The rest of the truck is ok. Brakes did last 100k before replacement. Some nagging issues; wires for back door were cut inside the door, rendering window/locks inoperable(poor engineering of wire routing), the front end is noisy, noise just appeared inside dash, can't keep u-joints in it. Good build, poor engineering.

Edit 02 Nov 10: I did also have a 94 Dakota. V8/Auto 4x4 since new, traded in for 2002 F250 in 2002. Probably the best vehicle I have ever owned as far as quality. Had 110k on it when traded in. Only maintenance in 8 yrs. No failure of any kind. Handled as tight as it should at that mileage, no rattles, vibrations, rust, etc.  Wife still has 96 Dodge van since new. 130k. Quality for Dodge in that era is above par. Same thing there, although trans needed to be rebuild at 120k, she has over 130k on it now. Only maintenance issues, no other failures, only slight rust at 14 yrs old(no holes).

Really?  I think you need to re-read all the posts re: 150K+ miles...

I remember back in high school - a car with 150,000 miles was ready for the scrap heap.  And it had be nursed along those last 30~40k to even get THERE.

Not sayin' there weren't those that did it, but GENERALLY SPEAKING....

+1 to that, new vehicles far outlast the older ones like kirkin said you never heard of a vehicle with more than 100k. I own 4 newer vehicles , from 87to 97 and the lowest mileage is 200000, the 4runner has 350000, Dakota 200000, Blazer 260000 and Sebring 200000.

And did anyone ever see the video where an old Chevy is run head on into a newer vehicle, results were the Chevy driver would have been killed on impact and the driver of the newer car would have walked away.

Most of the cars I ran across from the early 70's and late 60's usually ended up with over 400,000 miles on them without much maintenance.  I see a lot more of those cars and many going back to the 40's that are still going.  Most of the 80's and 90's cars I have noticed are already parted and crushed.

Mum had a used car lot and I got to trade out cars as others came in.  I always had a different car.  But many of these were old one that have been driven for a while and kept going.

I want to also use the SOHC4 as an example.  Lot's of them still running and I have seen many brought back from the depths of hell.

I have a hard time trusting a vehicle made in the last 20 years.  Those prior, I do not have these issues with most of them.

In the past, I would have felt ok passing a car down to a teen.  Now, not a chance.

But these are my expericences, others experiences may differ.

Agreed with that.  All my high mileage vehicles are second hand, I doubt I have more than 4500 invested in the 4 I own. Run them till they die and then donate to a fund for Viet Nam vets. I get bored with cars less frequently than bikes. Of the bikes I have that run I will probably not keep one more than a year. Cars are just a mode to get from a to b, bikes are a fun way. Larry

Same here. Never bought a new car and never will. That's why dependability that's built into the vehicle is more important to me than somebody buying new. I hope any car would last for it's first 50K -75K trouble free. Although some don't. It's what happens after that that really makes a car company or not.

As far as the guy saying Huffy makes a decent bike? I need to find an old article from a MTB magazine where a guy raced one just to see if it would hold up. He almost killed himself on it when the handlebar broke and he nearly impaled himself on the broken end. This was after a bunch of other failures before the guy made it down the course. Bent crank, frame, rims, brakes that exploded, etc. The bike literally fell apart. As someone raced MTB for 5 years, yeah I know bikes or used to 10 years ago. "If Huffy made an airplane, would you fly in it?" Hell no! That's why I take CR with a grain of salt.

Monster truck, the mileage isn't very good but you hardly ever get stuck unless you drive over a bus or an old motorhome.

Seriously though, I look for a vehicle that was well maintained by a picky pain in the dealers backside. I think, how a used vehicle was maintained is as important as who made it. My opinion, happy truck shopping.

All I had were huffys as a kid. BMX though. Beat the hell out of them and only thing that happened was a pedal came off its post...After the bike was over 10 years old and passed onto my brother. Maybe if I was hard core into biking, then I might spend the money.
But cr does have good info.I had a 94 gmc sonoma and almost all of their reports on it were dead on. I know others have used to it will good results too. Obviously you still have the change of getting a lemon, it happens. But if CR was really that bad like you think they are, most likely they would have died long ago.

I recently did an engine swap on a 99 V8 Dakota.  I have never been so frustrated.  It was a giant mess of standard and metric bolts I wanted to pull my hair out. I did an engine swap on my wifes Honda (450,000 mi) and it was so simple dropped it in started it up drove away.  The Dodge took weeks of trouble shooting to get the stupid thing to start.  After working on one I would never buy a Dodge.

Man, you really have a crush on me. If you do truly have a problem with me I'd much rather sort it out over PM than have you following me around thread crapping wherever I go. So please, send me a PM and we'll hug it out.
******

Let me clarify what I'm trying to say - anecdotal evidence in support of a larger pattern is useless. It's only useful in countering a definitive statement.

Incorrect:
Anecdotal evidence: My Honda engine lasted 100,000 miles
Conclusion: All Honda engines will last 100,000 miles

Valid:
Definitive statement: All Honda engines fail at 100,000 miles
Anecdotal evidence: My Honda engine lasted past 120,000 miles

This is not up for debate, this is not me being argumentative, this is a fact.

For a statistically relevant sample size, you need a random selection of n=20-30 (at least) before you can start making accurate conclusions.

Now let's look at our particular situation. There is nowhere near 20 responses per truck/model year, and the sampling here is far from random. We can conclude that a statement such as "My parents '05 F150 4.6 has served them very well with no problems at 130k miles" shouldn't be taken into consideration when determining how reliable a vehicle may or may not be. Does that make sense?

Add to this the variance in peoples' perceptions - what's a big deal to one person might not be to another. I have a friend with an '82 F150 who was talking about how great and reliable it's been, all he's done is rebuilt the engine, transmission, replaced a bunch of parts, etc., and he was being serious. To him, none of that was any big deal. To someone else, a broken cupholder could be the end of the world. So having someone say, "I've had my vehicle for X number of miles and it's been great" means very little. Additionally, people often get caught up in brand loyalty, and that also can influence a person's perception of a vehicle's performance and reliability.

As has been mentioned already, a vehicle's reliability is greatly dependent on prior maintenance. Unless someone always took their vehicle somewhere reputable to get serviced and has meticulous records, it's very hard to know how well it was taken care of. I keep a spreadsheet detailing all of the maintenance and work I do on my vehicles, but a buyer can't really know if I actually changed the oil every 2500 miles, or if I just typed that in for fun and let it go 10,000 miles between changes. Buying any vehicle used involves a certain degree of risk that can't be mitigated, especially when you're only given a limited amount of time to look the vehicle over (as appears to be the case in your situation).

Given these assumptions, your best bet toward determining a vehicle's reliability is to find someone that has compiled data from a large number of vehicles. Consumer Reports is the only publication I'm aware of, there may be more (or better) ones out there. MSN Autos also has some data complied on durability, problematic components, etc. listed by model year. For example, here's the page on the F150. They make it pretty easy to find specific problems by model year and compare spec across brands.

I'm sorry if my responses came off #$%*-ish, that wasn't my intention. It's hard to convey tone over the web, especially since I rarely use smileys (they're the laugh track of the internet).

I also didn't mean to insinuate that this thread is worthless, though I realize now that's how my first post comes across (hindsight, right?). What I meant to say is worthless is a single persons' perceptions as to a specific vehicle's reliability. Obviously, you can glean a lot about comfort, capability, and performance from reading specific experiences, keeping in mind that people are more likely to be forgiving to "their" brand and that a person's judgement is limited by his or her experience (someone that's never driven an Audi or Mercedes might believe an Impala has a nice interior, for example).

I like his opinions in a way, but I wonder what drives him.

Pursuit of truth and a disdain for misinformation. Unfortunately I'm limited by the fact that the best means of communication that humans have is language.

But if CR was really that bad like you think they are, most likely they would have died long ago.

Two words - Harley Davidson.

I apologize for derailing the thread in this manner, it wasn't my intent to make it spin this far out of control. Please carry on.
