keep the Cb550 or upgrade to the cb750f?
« on: October 27, 2010, 04:39:55 PM »
Ive decided on upgrading to a larger displacement bike for the sole purpose of horsepower.  Ive had an f1 in my garage collecting dust since the beginning of the summer and recently started the build. Before i get too far into project hell i have a couple questions, will the power be that noticeable on the streetand highway compared to the 550??  I also have been told that the steering geometry/handling  is better on the f's compared to the k's, .    I likehow my 550 feels and i am totally fine with a heavier bike, but i just want the acceleration/power/ handling from the 750f-if its there.........  Do i bother?

That's easy - keep the 550 and the 750! 2 bikes are better than 1!

I recently was faced with the same, and that is the decision I made. [but it's a 750K]

I thaught about that, but my fiance wants a bigger bike than her 350 twin anyways. Also, a new tank, clip-ons, rearsets, stabilizer, shocks, oil cooler, dual disc brake lever, lines, building a new seat and a whole lot more part needs that pop up in a build  is out of my price range. i was going to just re-fit all the stock cb550 parts on it and transfer all my cb550 cafe goodies over.

i sold my 550 to my buddy and got a k8 it eats that bike alive you will notice the difference big time on  big hills you can shift into fifth and pull while the 550 needs to be in third to keep the speed.... you wont notice the extra weight if u have a passenger nearly as much.... the 750 is one and a half times as big as the 550 theres definatly a difference

I am one who believes that having a back up bike is very important.  What if one has no gas and you need to ride?  What is you are working on one and you feel the need to ride?  For your mental health, keep both, consider a third bike too!!

Definitely go the the F1.  It has some improvements over the K bikes in brakes, handling and ride due to the frame geometry.  It also has engine, carb, and gearing differences for a bit more power.  Small things that add up to what I think is a noticeable improvement.  I think the 77/8 K bikes use the F0/1 engine.

I have both too...totally different.
I love the 550 for local ripping around, 750 is the grocery getter / camp tripper.
Put a 650 cam in the 550..which is very easy (one evening), and cheap($30-60), and it REALLY comes alive..
may want to put some bigger jets in it while your at it.
cheers!!
