New Member CB750 Project
« on: October 27, 2010, 05:25:49 PM »
Hi All,
I picked up a 73 CB750 about 3-4 weeks ago and I just joined the forum. Lot's of cool info here.

So, here is my project thread. I poked around to see if there was any sort of etiquette here for new project posts, but didn't really find any.

The bike I picked up was a fairly heavily modified bike that a guy who ran a shop in Thousand Oaks California (Near LA) had build for his wife once upon a time in the mid 80's. He had made it a chopper (I know, that's just offensive), but anyway.

I gotta say, the bike was f-ing ugly! with that cheesy lavender paint and those hideous pipes.

But for $600 and an assurance that the bike would pretty much start right up once I put a battery in it, I figured what the heck.

The guy had put a GS750E front end and a Suzuki swing arm that was longer to lower the bike. I might have to fiddle with the geometry, as I don't think it's right.

Fortunately, the guy was honest and it did fire straight up once I got a battery and put the carbs back on. They were nice, clean (inside and out), and the linkage was smooth and free.

I got a battery, mounted the carbs, changed the oil and got fresh gas and stared it up. It ran...badly. But seemed like it just needed a tune.

Once I it fired it up, I then started acquiring some parts. First was pods, clubman bars and an exhaust system.

I now have all those parts on and did a on the bike "bench sync" of the carbs and it actually runs pretty good. Here is a pic from the this morning when I started it.

You can see the water vapor out the exhaust.

Next is a real synch and some tuning and install the Dyna S pointless ignition.

Next parts are a Cafe Seat and some reasonable mirrors.

Oh, that seat is so heading to the dustbin. There will be no lavender on this steed.

Welcome,  you're right that lavender is so ugly that if I had it I'd pull the emblems and spray it  black just to hide it until I was able to get it professionally painted. Best of luck with your project, Larry

While that seat is downright repulsive, I'm actually digging that color scheme on the tank.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Thanks for the info. I think the owner said it was a GS750S but wasn't sure about the year. They have those anti-dive hydraulic actuators. Any dealt with these before?

There's nothing offensive by building a chopper out of a cb750. :)

There are plenty of nice chops out there...and some on this site as well.

Good luck on your build! I've just started on my own rebuild of a CB750K1. I personally think that last CB above build by Garage Company Customs is one of the best looking Hondas around.

That is an ironhead sportster seat circa 1982-85.  It could bring a handful of dollars on fee bay.  Never throw anything away, especially in the beginning.  It may be a much sought after piece.  Welcome to the forum, I like the lavender by the way, if it was more professionally done.

Well, now those are nice. But, the guy showed me a picture of how it used to be and it kinda made me nauseous.

Ok, it's been a while since I have posted here. Mainly because I was getting a bit frustrated with the bike and wondered if it was a total basket case and just needed to be recycled.

Bike ran like crap and one cylinder just wasn't firing at all. I just kinda went back to basics: got a solid-state Dyna pointless system, new spark plugs. Finally realize that the problem was fueling.

Float levels were all out of whack and a couple of Idle jets were plugged up. I cleaned them out while the carb rack still on the bike, but every time I would get one gripe cleared out it would develop another. I quickly realized I just needed to pull the carbs and tear them down. Lot's of crap in them. Took them all apart and put the bits in a box and went to the scooter shop down the street that has a ultra sonic parts cleaner.

When I got them back, there were so clean!!! Put it all back together, pulled the choke and viola!!! Thing fired right up and ran like a top.

I promised myself I would put any money into the bike till I got the engine running right. So, now that's accomplished, it's time to move forward.

First task is to redo the brakes...cuz, they suck! Despite the dual rotors and calipers, the front brake could stop a scooter. The back brake worked better. After examining the right rotor, I realize it was covered with grease.

The plan is: retro fitting the stock MC and resevoir from my SV650, stainless steel brake lines, rebuild the calipers and get some new pads. I might possibly slap a brembo on the bike.

I'm going to ditch the clubman bars and get some clipons. Woodcraft makes a a set and I think they will work better. I need to drop the front end and the clubmans won't let me do that.

Haven't got any new pics of the bike since it really doesn't look any different. Might have be nice to take some pics of the carbs, but you probably would be able to see anything. Also, I bet most folks here have seen plenty of pics of gunked up carbs. Once I get a a reasonable seat on there (anything is better than that lavender abomination), I'll post some pics.

Well, funny you should say that. I am going to replace all of those bits with some SS braided lines this week. They will be free and looking for a new home.
Interested?
Not sure what the shipping to BC would be, but I can't imagine it would be that much.

Thanks,
