Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. The 750 is too heavy, can't imagine taking it off road, wouldn't be very nimble.

Now a CL350 would be cool...

seen one years ago, can't recall if it was a sohc or dohc, done in the "paris dakar" style, might be alright for gravel roads but you wont do a backflip with two and a half turns without hurting yourself.

Thanks!  I  would only hot some gravel roads to connect BT.  I will post some pics of some cool bikes I have found.

Just spent the day riding my 750 on a bunch of twisty, single lane mountain roads and passed a few dirt road connectors that I kinda wanted to take but opted against. It sounds like a pretty sweet project. I've seen a couple that've been done w/ taller forks and new rear ends and I can't say I find them aesthetically pleasing.  I can certainly imagine that one done in more of a CL style could be pretty bad-ass. Keep us posted.

I think I'd opt for some TT pipes like the old Triumph desert sleds, hike the front fender a tad with some TKC80 tires front and rear, go kicker only and put it on a diet, try to find a plastic gas tank that would work, solo seat, and oil cooler mounted under the seat instead of up front (after most all the crap had been removed from under the seat). And a skid plate. It would be real trick to make a set of CL type pipes, 2 on each side, but that would be a chore, but way cool.

Word.  I can't even begin to imagine how low to the ground a functional skid plate would have to be with a 4:1, 4:2 or 4:4 under the bike.

Someone needs to lend this guy a CB750 and convince him that there's a market there.

I had a similar idea a few years ago. After a lot of thought I decided that the best way to do an "off road" CB750 would be to do a Ural-like design. Good for fire roads and such but without serious enduro pretentions. Too much weight, too high up to ever try any serious desert thrashing. I hear snapping bones every time I think about floggin' a 500+ pounder down the local desert trails.  I'm happy to just keep a couple of 'em ON the road! (well...usually) Good luck!

15w in the forks and your ready to go.....................but stay off of the nasty single-tracks with rocks!  Several memorable rides on my K0 and K3 include Pole Bridge to Lake Kintla in Glacier (in the rain), Pikes Peak hillclimb (1st in the AM = no traffic), California forest roads at Kennedy Meadows (2-up), and hundreds of miles of gravel Forest Roads in Northern Wisconsin. The stock exhaust has more clearance than a 4-1 header.

I've been getting back into biking these past several months, and currently have a nice-running, nearly bone-stock 1978 CB750K.  I would like a cafe bike also, and may get/build one.  But you know what......I guess I like these ol' CB750's for a reason that seems to be rejected by the market.  I'm told someone (Kawasaki?) tried to market an all-round bike, and it failed.  Folks want only special-purpose bikes.  Cafe racer.  Cruiser.  Offroad.  I like these old CB750's because they do it all.  Freeways, dirt roads, short trips, long trips......

It's like choosing a wife.  Sure, you can have something that performs amazingly in the bedroom (and who wouldn't appreciate that), but at some point you're going to want a nice home-cooked meal.  Another time, you'll want to go camping.  Lady Gaga isn't going to bait any hooks.

So I have the 80' cb750.  So far, a set of drag handle bars(look like old mx bars without crossbar), small tank from older cb 125.  next move is increase wheel size on rear, and tires for both with aggressive dual sport tread. don't know if I will put the airbox back in, sounds like it would be easier to maintain, but would like to lose the weight.  buying a cold steel rolled fat rear fender, going to chop short and put a smaller dualsport light and plate kit.  get some pics once I start doing some work.  I am a hack, so the idea is the only thing going for this project.
