Who's done the 400F or Super Sport bars swap?
« on: October 28, 2010, 06:39:14 AM »
I've collected all the parts to run 400F bars and pegs/levers on my CB500. The 400F bars seem very narrow. They're lower and more narrow than the aftermarket Super Sport bars I have.

The bike is SO comfortable to ride with stock bars and pegs. I think it would look better and more sporty with the lower bars and rear sets, though.
The rise of the 400F bars doesn't bother me so much as how narrow they are. But, I guess Honda knew what they were doing and, when matched with the 400F pegs, maybe it will all gel.

Who's running the lower bars and how do you feel about them? Are they a pain in the neck? Too low? Too narrow, or ???

(BTW, I still have a bone stock 1975 XS650B should I decide to do the Iron Butt or something)

I'm running the 400F bars on my 750K-76 and love them! Very comfortable for the long rides and the twisties over the mountain.
They're a bit short & I had some trouble fitting MC & getting a brake line fitting to fit but after trying a couple of different fittings, it worked out well & I really like the feel & handling. I'll never go back to the Schwinn handlebars that were stock.

On my 750K-73 project bike, I'm going to go with the aftermarket supersport bars since they're a bit longer & will fit the MC easier. They have slightly more pullback than the 400F stocker's but not alot.

The Stock 400F bars already have the holes to run the wires as you know & that's a advantage over the aftermarket bars where you've got to run the wire on the outside OR drill the holes in the bars yourself.

Once you've got the cables sorted out for length, it's a breeze.

Don't have any pics but i have had close lots of these old Honda's and i always use superbike bars. I have ridden 1000 mile days with just the usuall "stretch the legs" stops. Building a couple of bikes now and will be using the same bars... I am 5' 10 and around 145 pounds>
Yeah i know thats small but it makes me go faster.... ;D

The Super Sport bars don't look so bad. I've had Daytona bars before....one step up from the Super Sports...and they were comfy.
My biggest concern about the 400F bars is how narrow they are.

I have something similar on my bike, I've got about a 2 inch (maybe) rise, and still feel too tall for me, and mine are too narrow also. I don't fel as if I have good leverage with the bars in tight cornering. My FZR has wider bars than my 500.

You only need a little forward pressure on your inside bar when cornering......Not too sure what you mean. I have at times used RD250 and 350 bars {Later RD's} and they are no very wide but never had any problems at all..

I don't know why it feels like high effort, but it does. Tires pressure is good, head bearings are good, but it doesn't want to turn as quickly as my old 550 with wider bars.

Thats probably more to do with it being a bigger heavier bike. Compared to some bikes i have owned the 750 definitely feels heavier and i use steering dampers which makes it even harder to turn the bars. You may have to look at your riding technique because cornering is counter steering, if you are trying to steer the bike into corners that will not help at all and make the steering feel heavy......Either that or maybe your steering head bearings are a tad to tight.
