Chevy points???
« on: October 28, 2010, 07:01:00 AM »
I bought a 750K4 painted the tank and side covers. Then it occurred to me I should see if it runs. It has been sitting 20+ years.
When I remove the points cover I found what look like Chevy points set up. Does anyone have any information on them? I replaced
The plate with one off a K6 parts bike. Because there wasn’t any condensers in the system.

I remember those too! Are those allen head adjusting screws for gap? Those were nice for setting the dwell!

Good looking paint job and color!!! What is your honda decal made out of? Kinda looks like the same material they use for sport bike tank traction pads.

That set-up could well be an old Maxi-Dwell,they used Chevy points, got one in the original packaging somewhere around here stashed away.

I have a Maxi-Dwell on my 1977 750K which uses the Chevy points.  Your set-up could be that, only the built in timing light and condensers are missing.  The condensers would be on the back with the timing light.  There are some pictures of the Maxi-Dwell unit someone put on the internet that can be found at http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/alanshivley/maxi%20dwell/.

Not meaning to highjack, but this brings up a related question in my mind.  Could anyone use Chevy points on the 750 SOHC in place of the Honda points if they have the correct condensers?  We could do without a built in timing light, so if the Chevy points are a viable alternative, we don't have to worry so much about the quality of some of the Honda point replacement brands.

Condensers could be mounted some place like near the coils.  Chevy points could work, tho Honda points are are left and right.   Would take a different backing plate.  I had thought about doing something similar, in the 70's, but I can still get Honda points.

If one set of ponts is moveable, it may be Accell

If point plate is gold anodized aluminum, amd points are riveted, then it is Maxi-dwell with original points.

On the Maxi, the condersers are the size of chicklets, and are very small, plus there should be timing light & switch. I have never actually seen the Accell, but have run the Maxi, with great results

The plate is chromed steel and the 2/3 points move.
