I have learned so much here about bikes.

The Virago for my buddy was a challenge, but I had it running within a few weeks, so now on to something else.
They all seem to have their little eccentricities.

I was thinking about flipping it in the Spring. We'll see ;D

As long as we're going there, I'm very glad my wife is on the medication that means it only happens once or twice a year.  Makes life so much more pleasant.

Figured I would try and jump it and see where I'm at with the electrics 1st. Maybe try to start it.

Any luck?

Oh, I forgot to tell you, they have a neutral safety switch- has to be in neutral AND have the clutch lever pulled in to start. Mine likes about 3/4 choke to get going, but warms up pretty quick.

If you end up taking the tank off, be carefull of the two little wires that go to the fuel gauge.

Well......emptied the gas tank, fuel looked and smelt good.
Drained the 4 bowls and they had the obvious nasty smell of very bad gas.

New fuel added / with a bit of Seafoam.
Put tank back on and when I turned on the petcock had fuel every where!
Did the old wack the bowls with a rubber hammer and that stopped:)

I figured there would be a lot of junk in there, but hey who doesn't want to hear it run before a tear down?

Hooked up a battery from one of my 750's and sprayed a bit of quick start into the bread box and had success after a few tries.

It will only run on full choke, so I will have to pull the carbs for a thorough cleaning.

Yeah, def. go through the carbs. Maybe the petcock, too.
Speaking of which, the petcock is a vacuum type, but the 'bottom' position (I think it says 'PRI'= prime) is a free flowing setting. If you are not getting gas to the carbs that might be the culprit.

Thanks. I noticed in the straight position no fuel would flow out so I used the free flowing setting. That was wrong?

Giess it didn't come with an owner's manual, eh?  ;D  ;)

No, not wrong, just designed for a 'ready' motor with fuel already in the bowls. It needs the engine's vacuum to pull the gas from the tank.

During the summer, when I'm riding pretty frequently, I'll leave it in that position. But when it's sat for a while, I'll set the petcock to "PRI," let the bowls fill up & start the bike. During the warm up, I'll switch it to back to "ON" and let the engine's vacuum do the work.

No, but I have one on the way ;D

So pdxPope could the free flow setting cause flooding?

Yes and no. That setting is just like the petcock on a CB; it just lets fuel flow without restriction. However if the needle and/or seat on the float valve is not working, it would never shut off the flow of gas and cause it to flood.

But if it's working, I'd say leave it alone. I was only suggesting that it might be the cause of the bike dying when you give it throttle- maybe it's not getting fuel. Those early vac. systems were notoriously spotty.

I got a bit more done today.
Included a few photos of what's up...
Yeah, I know, what I mess I made. ;D

I ordered the carb kit today.

Probably jack it up tomorrow, and really take it apart ;)

P.S. None of the float valves were moving ::)

Well, I'm no expert, but I think you may have found the source of the flooding... :D

I have looked at a couple of on-line manuals, but can't figure out what these are for?
Looks like 2 sets of bolt threads are on the top, so something missing? A cap of some sort? I would like to remove them but don't want fork oil all over the floor if that's what it involves ;D

I have removed the brakes, fender and wheel and would like to continue the tear down.
