Prodigal SOHC
« on: November 21, 2014, 10:23:55 AM »
I bought this F2 as a project bike back in 2005. As you can see, it was a long way from stock and had been just a little abused ::) It was sold to me by a Hells Angel who wanted it out of his garage before his mates saw it!

There began a two year labour of love, which became an obsession and nearly cost me my marriage (so near and yet so far ;D) After a gazillion hours and an unjustifiable amount of cash, I had it finished. Ran it for a couple of years, sold it, regretted selling it, bought it back, sold it on again a year later. This is how it looked when it left my possession for the last time..

I often wondered what became of the old thing, and funnily enough contacted the fella I sold it to only a few weeks ago to see if he'd be willing to sell it back, but he told me he'd sold it on after only a few months and hadn't kept the buyers details. And now, by pure coincidence, it's cropped up on eBay. When I first saw it, my heart sank. But the more I look at it, the more I like it. In fact, I just might have to put a bid in!

What do you think? Fugly or cool? It's already getting attention, and if I'm honest I just haven't got the cash (or room) to add another bike to the collection. Good to see it's about to be resurrected again though :) This bike is destined to have more reincarnations than Dr Who!

Wow it's kind of cool to know that much of the recent  history of the bike. What's more,  speculating about  the history before the Hell's Angel part of the story.

That's cool.  I sometimes wonder how some of the bikes I sold turned out.  I saw a 650 I owned on CL after I traded it to a guy for a big flatbed trailer.  That was the bike the oil light would come on after it got good and hot.  A few other issues as well.  I told him every last detail on what I knew was wrong with it, however minor.  What was his description?  "Runs perfectly, nothing wrong with this bike..."    ::) ::)

Yeah it just keeps growing on me. I would never have put clip-ons on it, couldn't ride in that position since I done my back in trying to put an XJR1200 on the mainstand ::). But I think it's cool the way it is now, kinda mean-looking and I like the small headlight too.

I've been thinking back to when I was building it, from de-lugging the frame, fabricating a battery box and remounting the oil tank, making the seat and side panels, fabricating the santee-style electrical box (which my father-in-law welded for me and which proved to be a pain in the ass if you needed to drop the carb bowls), total (chopper-minimal) rewire, forks rebuilt, neck and wheel bearings, swingarm bearings, brake calipers and master cylinders reconditioned, s/s hoses, new cables, complete engine overhaul etc etc etc. Man, I put a lot into that bike and when I finished it I thought it was as good as it could possibly ever be. Funny how a few aesthetic changes have morphed it into something I could not have imagined at the time, and to my eye for the better.

If I had the cash it WOULD be sitting in my garage tomorrow at auction end, but this is one of those times I've got to be sensible - the kids wouldn't understand why I spent their Christmas money buying my old bike back :(

For now, I might just take some inspiration for the one I'm building currently.

I like what you did with it...still looks alright even with bad paint and an unfortunate headlight choice.  It is hard to keep your finger on what happens to 'em after they sell.
If it works good, it looks good...

Just getting over that.  Picking the bike up with a flat tire takes a bigger tug.  :( ;)

It would be a good snap up if you had the space and money.
