Wish me (us) luck, eh not so much.
« on: October 20, 2014, 10:22:52 AM »
Saturday evening I bumped into a guy that has 2- 78 750's one with a broken case, one stuck motor, a water buffalo, multiple Kawi's and a basket case xlch. He's been bartering a lot and decided to move all the bikes except the two he knows he can finish. He needs a carburated 2.8 S10 for the engine, he'll barter for one of those. He's putting it in a bike frame.
I'm going later this week with cash and see what I can score. He said I'll think I'm on pickers when I get the tour. He knows my brother and said he wants to deal. If I do well, I'll list whatever I sell here first.

Well the guy finally got done picking corn and we looked at his bike stash. The one 78K 750 looked pretty good for having a stuck motor the left side 4/4 pipes looked  to be in great condition. It's in a corner and you can't see the right side. The other 78 is in pieces all over the shop. There was a KZ1100 shaft with toasted wiring, it might be the deal. The water buffalo has no carbs and it's stuck. probably full of mouse pee. It's a little rough but the no carbs ruined it for me. There's a super 90 not for sale, a harley with a bad tranny repair, a couple of OK KZ1000's. all that and he won't name one price. He wants me to think about it and call him. fudge.
If they ain't worth nothin I'll just let em sit. He said he wants me to do the buffalo though.

Sorry too dark for pictures, it was so cold he closed the barn door.

Just getting the cylinders off a GT750 even when they are not seized can sometimes be a major challenge due to the fact some are known to have severe corrosion on the cylinder studs. There are some tricks and some have made a special plate to assist. If he is paying you to fix it don't cut yourself short, these can be a real challenge. Crank seals should probably be inspected/ redone also if your taking the engine down.

Thanks for the info. He wants me to buy it. He's very optomistic that I'm the one that can get it going. I got a song and dance about how he needs to sell these projects that he'll never finish, but on another day the mood changes and he's hoarding again.

I know somebody like that and sometimes it irritates my wife   ;D
I have a seized 1972 GT750 that was in an accident and have soaked it down for a couple months and it has not broke free. Have not tried big heat yet. Bike does look like it was left out though.

If you ever get it running, check the swingarm bolt: most of those had not enough threads on that bolt, so torquing down the nut did NOT tighten the arm. We had to recall them and install a thick washer under that nut to make the arms tight. Sad story...

I bought a cb900c instead. I always thought the 5x2 trans was cool.  I'll get back to this guy after I sell something.

Thanks for the heads up on the swingarm bolt. This 900 has the shop decal from the local Honds/Suziki shop. I'd love to peel it off and stick it on the sandcast. it was the first 750 sold there.
