CB550 tank fit
« on: November 02, 2010, 04:06:43 AM »
The 1975 CB550 I acquired this week is apparently an assembly of parts from several years' bikes (remember that old Johnny Cash song?).  When the forward trunnion-type mount is fitted, the petcock barely clears the carbs and the rear tongue won't fit into the rubber mount at all.  The seller thinks the tank is a '76 forced onto the '75 frame.  Does anyone know if Honda changed the tank design that much from 1975 to 1976?

Also, is there a source for aftermarket tanks that fit SOHC Fours? It would be nice to have some tank-shape options.  I won't be able to restore this bike to pristine condition, so I might as well consider another style tank.  I just want to set the bike up as a reliable road machine, not a cafe racer or bobber.  Thanks!!

1975 CB550K (rider)
1975 CB550K (shaping up, slowly)
I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride. . .

Many tanks will fit, but only the 75 will fit without modification.  I know of no atermarket tanks that would fit without modification.  Sometimes it is simple like a mounting clamp, and sometimes it will require much more such as seat modifications, welding, or bracket installation.  Pick one you like off the net and post it here.  People will identify the tank and then it is a matter of locating a new or used one.

In 75, there were both K and F model CB550s with quite different tanks.

All the F model tanks fit all the other models.  They would even go on K models with a seat change since the F tanks were longer.
The K model tanks didn't change from 75 to 76 except for color.

I wonder if someone is trying to put a 750 tank on a 550?
