Topic: Moving from US to Melbourne... What should I bring?

Hello to you all down under!

I received a job offer and if your gov't approves i will be heading to Melbourne in January or so.  I'm looking forward to it and already enjoying the freedom from material things that is coming to us as I sell everything we own.

I just decided last night that I may be selling my CB650 cafe... and I'm ok with it (even though it has Terry's oil cooler adapter on it.  Works great, nice work!).  I was going to

I've been having a squizz at all the used bikes for sale...
Not that I have a ton of money, but I noticed that a new S1000RR goes for about $10K more than what I could get one for here.  Should I just bring one over?  Is there any way around that tax/rego issue bumping the price up $10K?

What would be smart to bring?  Any of you guys need anything that I can get for you?   My helmets won't even pass the OZ inspection since they will be lacking the holographic sticker.  But I see Redwing boats going for $400AUS at a motoshop and I can get them here for much less.  

So many things to think about. Does anyone have any input?  I don't want to get myself or anyone into import trouble, I just want to take advantage of any opportunities that might present themselves to help us all out.

I can't help you with import info at all I'm sorry, but if you're going to be riding in Melbourne, bring some good wet weather gear with you.
You might hear it rains for 9 months of the year down there but it's not true!
It only rains for 6 months.......... & drips from the trees for 3.

Terry lives just outside Melbourne so i would send him a PM and ask him the same questions, he has also imported bikes so i think he may have some answers for you.....

you'll need a rain jacket, shorts, leathers and hail cover.....and you'll be wearing/needing it all on the same day! Just kidding, melbourne is a great city you'll love it, they allow bikes to park on the footpath in the city, although it is famous for frequent changing weather. However, you'll be able to ride all year round unlike what you're probably used to. There's also a good place called Central Motocycles in the city that has 750s, etc for sale so bring your dwindling dollar!

Hi Eliot , in regards to your bike i would bring it over ,  our prices are very expensive compared to your  bikes and accessories , why ? when our dollar is equal with yours . I have been noticing lately lots of people in Australia are importing classic bikes from America so it must be cost effective . (check our e bay on classics  ! )

Thanks for that input.  I just requested a quote from one Oz company to do that.  We recieved our visa approval and we leave the US on Jan 5th.  I think I need to PM Terry in Oz and see if they can recommend a crate service.

Hopefully no one gets bent outta shape about the 50 cent Aussie octagon coins I epoxied on where I chopped my subframe and the 20 cent Aussie octagon coins I epoxied on over the old mirror holes.
