replacing clutch plates
« on: March 12, 2006, 02:51:04 PM »
Well I've decided to replace the clutch plates on my '82 650sc.  Only one little problem...theres this weird locknut in there that my book says needs a specialty tool to remove.

Its not listed on the parts companys i use and have a feeling its probably bloody expensive.

What do you guys use to get this off of there? any suggestions would be good.

oh also put the 4-1 mac exhaust on and its BEAUTIFUL my god i love it

edit: finally managed to find other threads on it...never mind:)

well there is actually a little tool for it.

I ended up buying one that was too small so i dremeled it to fit.

but they are out there if you go to a good honda shop they should be able to find it.  hint: make sure to measure your nut.

I made my own from a 15/16 socket ( only because I had 2 of them), used a thin bladed 4 inch grinder, took bugger all time and worked a treat. I do believe these are available to buy eg Z1 enterprises, but the time frame and shipping made me become a tool killer. by the way, this was on my 650 motor so you should be sweet, you may even be able to use an inch socket

There is a special wrench, but it's easy to make it yourself. I just dremeled bits off a 24 size socket wrench and it works.
Don't bother buying special tool for that. Aha, and you will need to block the drivetrain to unscrew it. For me a block of wood at the rear wheel did it....

Regards!

Thank you, I followed the Haynes method and bent one of those toy ten pegs down two sides of a 1-1/16" socket, chocked the wheel with a 2x2, held the brake and put it in fifth gear.  Worked like a charm.  CB750K4.

BTW:  Are clutch plates supposed to resemble something from a BBQ grill?

For what it's worth, I generally use a hammer and drift for custom nuts.  Just put the drift near a corner of the nut and tap.  Sears has an inexpensive brass drift set, and I use them often when I need to bang on something metal.
