Introduction and a question
« on: December 08, 2010, 12:36:56 PM »
Hello, I'm new to this forum. Found it while doing search for Cafe Racer. Nice forum and some very cool bikes. I have built a few custom bikes over the years but they were cruisers or full on sport bikes. Those have gotten to be old hat as far as I am concerned and I am venturing into an area that has always intrigued me. The project I have decided to do is a CB550 and there seems to be a lot of info here. Kudos. The first place I want to start is the suspension and brakes. Has anyone thought of using the Suzuki SM400 wheels/brakes? These are 3.5" front and 4.25" rear. I would like to run a 110-120mm front tire and a 150-160mm rear tire. I have an '04 Gixxer frontend I think I can adapt the Motard wheel to, not sure about the steering stem to Honda neck. These new bits will likely stress the CB550 frame so it would have to be strengthened with some extra gusseting along with A stronger swingarm I suspect. One of the ares of curiosity is tire width as it would pertain to the chain alignment. One other item, I want to run a 520 chain instead of the 530 but have as yet not been able to find a vendor that makes CB550 engine sprockets in 520.

welcome, you might want to measure the swing arm, will that large a tyre fit, let alone interfere with the chain alignment.
