Oh deer - my first kill!
« on: November 02, 2010, 12:18:22 PM »
This past Sunday I was my way back to Atlanta, after spending the weekend in Ohio for my favorite aunt's funeral.  20 miles outside of Canton I hit a deer! It was pitch black, we were going about 70 and all of a sudden there's a deer in the middle of  the lane  only about 50 yard away! I managed to slow the car down to around 35 and swerved to the left gently, which would have meant that would not hit the deer, but true to form, the damn stupid deer ran to the left and I clipped it with the right side of the car.
Believe me, there was no more room for me to turn anymore, without either flipping the car or ending up going across the median into on coming traffic. It was surreal watching it land on the windshield, no it didn't break it, and then disappear into the darkness.
The damage is  a broken light unit, the impact force was hard enough to force the front right panel back a hair so the passenger door will not open and a few small dents. Of course it could have been worse if we'd hit it head on, most likely it would have been sitting in our laps!  I hate to imagine hitting one on my bike, yikes!

Glad to hear you are OK. Actually, the recommended response is to brake firmly, but not to swerve or turn.. if you are in a car of course.  ;)

I did the same several years back in NW Arkansas on a trip to Sam's Throne in the middle of the night.
I swerved left and the damn deer kept running left. I braked a bit and didn't hit him full speed but enough to knock him back a few feet.
I got out to go wrench his little neck for hitting my car but he gained composure and saw me coming after him so he split.

"When emergency crews arrived at the scene, the driver of the vehicle was holding the offending animal in a headlock and punching it in the nose while screaming 'you son of a b!tc#, you damn dirty son of a b!tc#!'"

Deer jumped out and hit my car while I was on route 15 in CT.  I was driving along at sane parkway speed and saw it standing on the side of the road.  It's been a while but if I remember correctly, there were cars in the left lane and cars behind me so I couldn't slam on the brakes.  I figured he was about to jump out in front of me so I accelerated a bit when I was a short way from him.  Don't know if it was the smart thing to do but it worked because sure enough he went for it but hit the right headlight and mostly side of the car.  Had to drive home with the right light shining 45 degrees up.  Pushed the fender back just a bit so the passenger door wouldn't open too.

You people must not spend much time in Michigan.  These stories are common in Michigan, hardly worth posting.  One time on a late night joy ride in retired Chevy Caprice cop car, there was a line of deer crossing the road.  I got it slowed some and tried to squeeze between two.  Back end got to wagging and I ended up swatting two of em off the road, they both went flying in opposite directions.  Only real damage done was a patch of deer fur stuck under the drivers side door handle, or maybe the damage just blended in with prior evidence of ramming, jumps, tight squeezes, and vandalization.
If it works good, it looks good...

Very common in Central Texas too, I hit one on my street. Luckily I was not going fast, slowed down, he bounced off the front end of the car and kept running! Minor damage to Honda car.

the next one I hit and kill, I'm taking it home and I'm gonna throw it on the grill. Okay, I'll gut it, skin and marinade for a few days~

Is a wife/girlfriend/member of the authorities going to walk into your bathroom one day and see a deer carcass soaking in a bathtub full of marinade?

Actually, in many states you can legally keep any deer you hit with your car. Georgia for one, and in Michigan you need only ask the police for a permit which will allow you to keep the deer. Seems only fair since the average damage to a car is $2,000+/.  ;)

Yep, saves the road maintenance crews from having to respond to a code 36.

When I worked maintenance one summer you knew when you got that call for a code 36 on Monday morning that damn cat or dog got killed on Friday at 5PM on a hundred degree day and it stayed in the hundreds all damn weekend.  >:(
