new to the forum and need 550 ss carb kits and am lost
« on: June 20, 2011, 03:11:25 PM »
so i have a 77 cb 550 super sport model and i and have a hard tome finding the right carb rebuild  kits for it.
i keep finding kits for k and f models and the pics don't look like what i have. like this : ( http://www.partsnmore.com/parts/honda/cb550/?filters[fitting]=custom&filters[category]=carb  ) the 13.00 rebuild kit says its for the 550k yet it look just like my carbs parts.
and then on dime city cycles i get this, (http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-engine-parts-honda-cb550-carburetor-rebuild-kit-18-2422.html) which looks nothing like what i have. the float valve and bowl gasket are different. then they have the 500 carb kit with looks like what i need. (http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-carburetor-parts-honda-cb550-carburetor-rebuild-kit-18-2423.html)
so what gives any one know where i can get a a decent rebuild kit for the 77 550 supersport?

I think the 550f is the super sport, the main difference was the exhaust, and i think the main jets on the carbs.

I have a 550k it came with stock 4into 4
1978 cb550k
1998 Harley Springer Softail
2004 Harley Heritage Softtail (sold)
2001 Vespa 150 (sold)
1980 Kawasaki Kx 80  (first Bike)

The F model uses different carbs from the K model in 77 and 78. I think they are the same as the 76 and earlier K's.

You probably don't need a full rebuild kit. New gaskets should be enough.

The carbs should have numbers (and possibly letters) on them. What do they say.

All the F models (SuperSports) regardless of year model, used the same carb type and use these carb kits.

...Assuming it still retains any F model heritage, of course.

Should still be able to get them from Honda.

Dime city cycles doesn't know WTF they are talking about.  Ignore them.

Why do you need to replace the metal parts?

it is the f model kit that you need
that brats place had the late model 750 kits pictured dont trust it
i have an f model and i can assure you it is the same as the super sport that came later
the only difference at all was that some of the later ss models had needles with rubber tips
but the metal ones if that happens to be what you get will work just as good but i would advise using a paper element fuel filter in line as none of the carbs f or ss  react well to any rust
so if your needles let fuel out the overflow tube take the bowls off and clean them thouroughly that will stop the problem unless you have a piece of rust lodged in the seat then take the needle out and clean the seat with a match stick (the wood end) as well as clean the bowl
it should be fine after that
my needles are 38 years old and all i have ever had to do was clean the seats with the match stick and polish the needles with 2000 grit sand paper i have solid not rubber tipped needles do not polish the rubber tipped needle with sand paper soak it in lemon juice and clean it with a cotton rag
