fuel petcock question
« on: August 02, 2010, 12:24:56 PM »
This is directed at one or more of you oldtimers who are intimately familiar with the differences among the various models of SOHC-4s.
The petcock on my '72 750 K2 was leaking, so I ordered all the little gaskets, o-rings & springs to rebuild it. When I took it off the tank, I noticed there was one brass tube that went up into the tank. I had always thought there would be two; one for main, a shorter one for reserve. Also, the tube did not project up out of the valve at a right angle. It leaned back slightly.
I cleaned it and put the new parts in and reinstalled it. Doesn't seem to leak anymore altho the valve handle has more resistance than before which I am asuming is a good thing. Does the part about only having one tube and it leaning back sound normal? Really just trying to learn more about my bike. Thanks for any responses.

one tube.  when the top of the tube is above the gas level in th tank you switch to reserve.  the bottom of the petcock has an opening and the gas goes thru there on reserve.

I think the petcock I just rebuilt for my CL350 is like the one the 750 used.  Mine had one long tube straight out of the petcock with no screen around it, then it also has a smaller tube with a screen which is the reserve.  I'm willing to bet that over time someone accidently broke off the small tube, it shouldn't effect anything IMO.

The single tube and the lean are both correct.
It took 10 years but she's finally done!
