Removing Air filter housing.
« on: December 14, 2010, 01:54:18 PM »
I want to take the air filter housing off of my bike and inspect it and inspect the air filter and possibly put some high performance air filters
on my bike. The only problem is the air filter housing on my bike is massive and its almost like they built the bike around the thing. does anyone have any advice on
how I could get this sucker off my bike? I have a 1976 honda cb750a

Dunno if the A is different from the K but here goes the K way.  Undo the two wingnuts under the housing and lower it a bit.  Slide it out one side or the other.  The wingnuts will catch the carb drain hoses.

As for higher performance, if your engine is stock and you are just looking at changing the filter, you already have the filter/housing (stock setup) performance setup.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

actually I noticed marking on the air filter housing that said cb750f-f...

why that is on my cb750a  I have no idea.   It says to undo the wingnuts on the bottom of the housing in my shop manual but I haven't been able to find any wing nuts.

Post a pic of the housing in case it is not stock.  It could also be possible that someone replaced the wingnuts with regular bolts underneath.

I am surprised no one else has chimed in that has an A or at least been intimate with one.

Here is a pic of the bottom of the K airbox and wingnuts. I have seen some PO replace them with other fasteners. Or someone put on a different box. According to the parts book you have 2 halves to the OEM box, but there are not winguts on yours. Appears they fasten to threads in the top half of the box just like the K. I have seen the area they thread into start to slip on occasion and the fastener will just spin in that case.
