How do I check if a motor is free/frozen if not on a bike?
« on: November 05, 2010, 08:16:29 AM »
Going to check out a basket case 550 tomorrow that comes with an extra motor.  How do I check if the motor isn't seized if the kick start and shift levers have been removed?

Try and rotate the big nut to the crankshaft on the points side (you'll have to take the points plate off) clockwise.
If it rotates, the engine is not seized.

Does it matter which gear it is in?

Take a battery and some jumper cables with you.  Clamp one side to the case (negative) and the positive side to the starter wire.  This is how I got an engine "un-frozen" after wrestling with the kick starter.  The kick starter should turn over the engine.  It's a little cumbersome if the engine is on the floor.

If the sprocket is not attached to anything (a chain, for example), it kinda doesn't matter.  The exception is if you have a locked transmission.  For that reason, put it in any gear to ensure the tranny isn't locked up.  You want to see the sprocket turn :)

No without the chain attached, the trans is irrelevant to turning the engine. It would be nice to shift it thru all the gears which could involve rocking the engine crankshaft back and forth (with that crank nut) so the gears will mesh.
