That stuff is sexy.  I should probably get a set and just make my frame/exhaust/suspension work with it, eh?

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

You won't be disappointed mate, my K1 (fitted with Brians "Ram Charger" filter setup) has never run better! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Those nice red 550 stacks would be an interesting start.  I'm using the yellow ones on my K3, and that's about the sum total of were I'm at with the colour scheme.  LOL

Terry's comment has pushed me over the TinTop!

Do you still have a set for the K0-K1? Is the price in your first post still good?

Thanks, Keith

1st orders (550 & early 750) go to the Post Office tomorrow. ;D ;D

The 750 PD orders should be shipping early next week.  Everything is boxed with a shipping label, just waiting for the stacks to arrive.

First post on this forum, I just got my first Honda, a 1978 cb550k, the guy I bought it from was a legend, he did some very nice work on it and kept it mint. I am also new to tunning carbs, and really feel like my bike could us it. It currently has pods, aftermarket 4into1 and has supposedly been tuned with 105 jets and the floats set to 13mm.

Now my questions to all the gurus: The bikes idle RPM's are very hard to control before it is rode for at least 30min, the RPM's are all over the place from 1400 to 4000 with just the slightest twist of the throttle then I have to readjust the throttle at the carb. after readjusting about 6 times and ridding for about 30min it's fine.

It sounds like in this thread this could be due to the carbs being hard to tune with pods, should i ditch the pods and go for one of these puppies?

I am going to attempt to sync the carbs this weekend, hoping this helps a bit.

Thanks heaps!

Also previous owner said he thought the carbs could use a slightly larger main main jet like a 110.

Welcome to the forum. Yes pods cause problems. Yes it seems that this filter can alleviate these problems. Should you drop $$$$ to get one? Sure if you have it to spend. You should start a build thread on your bike where you can ask questions about tunning and jet your carbs as well. Also you could tell us about this "legend".

Welcome to the forum decafe.

Your 78 550 would have come with 46C PD carbs, is that what is still on it?  That would be my 1st question, as these were jetted lean from the factory.  Regarding your the issue with the idle.  My 550's 46A PD's currently have one size larger slow jets (40's), and 98 mains (stock 76 sizes), and is very lean above 4K.  However, it starts (on choke), idles very nicely, and pulls cleanly.  I will be going to 110's, possibly 115's because of my pipes & the filter.  So your 105's could be slightly lean at the top end.  The fact that the idle problem seems to go away once fully warmed up is interesting.  Have you checked that the carbs are closing freely (no cables), and that the cables are in good condition, routed properly, and move smoothly?.  Quick, simple test - (cold, without engine running) roll throttle open to 1/2, 3/4 open, then let go of throttle.  The carbs should close instantly, with an audible snap.

For a carb sync to be any good, all the other parameters have to be in spec. 1st (timing / valve clearance - the basic 3K tuneup).

As ffj said, the filter kit was designed to alleviate the slow speed / part throttle problems Pods cause by the removal of the stock stacks, while promoting free breathing everywhere else.  I do have 550 kits available (blk, or red stacks currently), but will leave it to you to decide if it is for you.

The 1st packages have gone. ;D ;D ;D  You should expect them in 6 / 10 days, so likely before next weekend. ;)

There are two things I forgot to do though.  One was to include the install notes, which I will email to you.  The 2ND was to remove the flash at the bell.  In my haste to get things packed, I simply forgot.  My sincere apologies for this quality control oversight.   A quick wipe with some fine paper will remove it. ::)

Looking forward to the 1st feed back.   Thankyou to all who have stepped up, and supported this project.

Also you could tell us about this "legend".

Ha ha, "Legend" is just gushing Aussie slang for someone who you think is really cool mate, not necessarily a real "living legend" like Neil Armstrong, or Barak Obama......... ;D

Wow, thanks guys for all the quick feedback I really appreciated it, I didn't expect anyone to care.

Thank you Tintop, I will look into the carbs closing and cable, timing and valve clearance this weekend, I suspect these should be 'spec' as the 'legend' was pretty pedantic about this bike, who knows until I investigate though. I will probably end up purchasing one of your filters but I want to learn how to get the bike tuned as best possible as is before I start spending more money unless these bikes are near impossible to getting running well with pods - thoughts?

ffjmoore thanks for the suggestions, I'll start a build thread for the bike...hopefully people will look at it.

Now the 'Legend', yes Aussie slang but the guy is awesome, named Fast Eddy supposedly used to frequent this forum.

Thanks all!

If you manage to get some semblance of tune from pods you are going to have to retune if you buy Tintops filter. I would throw the pods at someone you don't like and go with Tintops filter, tune once and forget..... ;D ;)

@ RR. I sure hope so. This 836cc bike is terrible below 4K and fowls plugs badly under normal driving and is lean lean lean @ WOT. 120 mains/40 idle with mid cam. Shouldn't be this way and I've gone up and down jet wise trying to fix it.

Your's is on it's way y2kcowboy.  Postal (& border security ::)) willing it should be there for next weekend.

One thing to check given your symptoms is the needles.  If they are the originals (K3?), they may be worn in the part throttle area, were most daily riding happens.  This would cause the rich going lean issue, as the rest of the needle would be original dimension.  Changing jets to cure one end, would make the other worse.  Where do you have the clip set at?

I sure do Mick, no change to my stock carbs except 130 mains, and it goes like a rocket! (well, it did before I blew the head gasket, but considering the punishment I've dished out on this engine over the last 5 years, I'm surprised that I haven't blown it up!) ;D
