Hi everyone. I've been lurking around here for the past couple of months and reading every ones posts and I've learned a lot so far from you guys so thanks. I am new to motorcycles but have been playing around with cars for about 8 years so it should be a pleasant change to work on something different and get to finally ride.

I live in AZ and its so nice out here all the time that I figured it was time I got a bike. I am getting a really nice deal on a 1973 Honda CB750 from a family friend thats owned it since the seventies. Here's the stats:

1973 Honda 750 Four
40k miles
16” rear wheel with extra wide tire
1977 gas tank
4 into 2 side cut pipes
Windjammer III with lowers (not shown)
Raised handle bars

I personally think the '77 tank, (has a dent anyway) seat, handlebars, rear basket thingy/tail light, and windjammer look rediculous and will be promptly removed once it gets shipped here from Minnesota. I would like to make it look more clean and simple so any suggestions on replacement parts would be greatly appreciated. It appears to be pretty well taken care of considering its age and location.

Can't agree more.  I say sell them on e-bay to fund replacement stock stuff.  Happy hunting.

Thanks guys. Do you think that all that crap will even sell on ebay? I cant imagine anyone actually wanting any of it but maybe thats just my lack of knowlege on this stuff. I think I may end up sanding the tank and side covers and painting them flat black for now as I cant stand the color much either.

Hey BAZ, you would be totally surprised at what some people would be interested in out there on the planet!! Me personally.... I'd ditch the fairing & seat in a heartbeat!! There has to be loads of people that have a woody for stuff like that but I hope to never be one of them!!! (whatever floats their boat ya' know!!!) Keep us posted with whatever ya' come up with anyhow cause its all good if its SOHC!!

Haha, thanks for the suggestion. i guess i'll start browsing on ebay.

I like the look of the original pipes but I know they go for kind of a lot in decent shape. Anyone know of any aftermarket companies that make a stock looking exhaust? Should I just keep what I have for the time being?

One more thing. I kind of dig the whole "cafe" look and would be open to suggestions regarding "cafe style" handlebars that are still comfortable to ride around with as a beginner. Maybe start piecing together a cafe-themed bike like I've seen so much of on here. Oh, and whats with the 16" rear wheel? isnt the stock size 17"?

Yeah BAZ...I went back & looked and you do have a 16 inch rear wheel.I want one too but still have the stock 18.There's another cool thing about that bike!!!! Keep posting and people here will just keep plugging you with good things for your new toy!!

Welcome, Looks like a very promising project, while you are waiting for it
   to arrive, get a couple of Good manuals for it, and just start reading them.
    also go thru the faq's pages. {it will help greatly later on}
        the more you work on it the more fun having it becomes.....

I would lose the Windjammer and the luggage rack. The seat could be more comfortable than the original which truly sucks, so you may want to keep that for awhile. It looks like a sweet ride. Good luck with it!!!!!

Anybody have any insight on lower profile handlebars with a comfortable stance? Also, why is a 16" rear wheel desired over the stock 18" or whatever?

The 16 inch makes the bike sit a bit lower and allows a wider tire.You can't go very wide on the stock 18 inch (pizzacutter)

Desireability is a personal experience.

Speculation...
- Wider rim width allows a wider tire, better traction.
- Smaller tire diameter effectively changes final drive ratio and gives better acceleration potential at the expense of higher engine revs and reduced tire mileage endurance.
- Lowers rear of bike to improve stability of short legged riders.
- Also, changes steering head rake some, influencing handling toward more of a chopper style.

I am envious..

 I would not even allow that bike to be shipped with all the stuff on it. <grin>

This must be why even today. I prefer naked modern bikes.

I'd take it back to stock, including the seat. I put a KQ on my 750 and immediately regretted it. I could never get comfortable on that seat, it forced me to sit too far forward. Also, look in the archives for the post regarding handling and how to improve it (new, better bearing all around, basically).

hya Baz, i disagree, you haven't been reading EVERYONES post over the last few months, because I (for instance) have been away and haven't posted for a long time...So, welcome! no one seems to have said that do they? well wellcome from everyone ( i'm sure) But they are all wrong about what to ditch, you actually need to ditch ALL of it, in fact as a sort of initiation rite of passage on this site you have to sell your first bike for nowt... sort of "join the club"  I suppose I could take it away for you to help you out, and
just to get you started on a new project I could let you keep the windjammer / seat / dent in the tank (but not the rest of the tank) . hope this helps.

It wasn't a Previous Owner who didnt know what he was doing that messed up your bike, it was The Previous owners mate who THOUGHT that HE did.

As far as your bike goes , strip everything off you don't need , then take off
some more parts you need, but dont want. Spraypaint everything black and be
done with it  ;D
