Cleaned up the axles a bit.  I've never had a bike that I would be able to assemble and stay clean in the process.  Got to work on the rear rim and forks and I should be able to get it on wheels (until I get new tires)..

Really the best way is to do one thing at a time and clean up after each thing, including your hand's tools and workbench. Seems like a pain however it does really keep the rebuild clean. After that you will be happy you did it..

Hang in there..

Rear rim work.  And found out my bearings are shot...  I hit the spokes with a brass brush.  It didn't seem they were as much rusty as they were coated in crud.  They may rust now but they look nice at the moment!  The spocket and cover were coated black too just like the hub.

*edit* oh and is that area behind the spocket supposed to be greased?  I'm guessing no...

It's looking great!  I'm doing a similar project right now in which I'm thoroughly disassembling everything for a cleaning but leaving some patina.

If you are interested I've got a tip that you may want to try on the spokes. Take an old t-shirt or some similar material and cut it into strips about an inch wide and a foot long. Then take some Barkeeper's Friend (available at Lowes or the grocery store) and mix up a paste that you can dip the strips into. Once you have the strip saturated with the paste you can lay the wheel down and start on one side looping the strip under each spoke and pulling it back and forth as you work up and down the spokes. Keep the strip saturated and as they wear out just grab another one. It takes a little time but you'll be very pleased with the results. You'll also figure out all kinds of other uses for the Bartender's Friend.

Watching your thread closely and anxious to see how it turns out.

Cheers!

My paint job sucks...  Scratches and chips with ease..   >:(  Definitely lessons learned for next time.  I'm mocking up the bike mainly to see what hardware I'm missing.  Shouldn't be anything major, a few bolts here and there.  Still need a speedo though and new tires though.

Looking good from the pictures. The new rubber is a wallet killer for sure but one of those things you really don't want to go cheap on. Really good work on that rear rim.. Looks much much better!

Moved along today.  I mocked up the engine mount hardware like I've been doing for the other nuts and bolts.  Turns out I'm missing the lower bolt for the front pair of motor mounts.  Come to think of it, this bike had a engine guard on it when I disassembled it.  No biggie.

The brake lever was an adventure.  After much thought on how the spring went back on, I looked at my 350Fs  ::)  I then spent a good 45 minutes mocking up a foot peg and mounting the rear wheel to make certain the lever mechanism didn't come too far forward and hit the swingarm.  I never noticed anyone talking about this and I wondered why considering it was a pretty exacting evolution.  I got it mocked up and before I took it back off, I scribed a mark in it so I would know the proper position of the brake lever to the shaft.  That's when I noticed it...  Two little dimples that you simply lined up, one on the shaft and one on the lever  ???  My calculation was right on though!

I got the wire harness, battery box, and electronics box, air box back on and cleaned up the front fender.  Oh, and found a brake caliper mount in a big box of brake parts I have.  Maybe tomorrow I'll hook the motor up to my HF leakdown tester.  I know the engine isn't frozen but outside that it's anyone's guess...

*edit*  And I had the fork tubes on backwards....  Took me 15 minutes to figure out why my fender was weird...

One more photo but blurry.  Air box in and not much left to do with the chassis.  I have some work to do on the handlebars though.  I need to install one switch and the other has the turn signal switch frozen..

Good idea to test fit the bolts, wish I had done that. It was not until after I had the motor in that I could not find two bolts and one nut and ended up at the hardware store just before closing trying to match up what I needed.

Looking good..

Looking good, but the photo of the foot brake area just doesn't look right to me, probably just a matter of final adjustments but the engine/foot peg nut/bolt seems to contact the brake arm and the adjusting nut and bolt has no threads left to move it away. I haven't looked at mine lately I'm just making an observation of the photo.

I found that a little odd as well.  I'm pretty sure I have it all lined up correctly though.  I'll look at my 350Fs and see what they look like...

Got into the motor tonight that was seized.  It looks like the only thing wrong was the pistons froze.  The crank was free but I had to cut the cam chain to get it apart.  I actually have another engine from an F bike that I was going to use but I think I can salvage this one.   I snapped a few pictures so I would know how to get it back together.  I also noticed the gears are unlike any I've seen in my 350F/400F motors I've torn down.  I don't remember the dogs having that shape...

*edit* and since I can no longer avoid removing the rotor since I need a new seal set, I need one of those pullers...   :(

Continuing to chip away.  Used the $$$ I got for Christmas to get some odds and ends.  I got the shaft out that I had mentioned in another thread by using a rotor I had laying around and an engine mount bolt.  Worked great.  Now to clean and blast the cases...

Cleaning up the motor.  I never realized how fast you can burn through a can of brake cleaner or starting fluid when you are cleaning these up...

More photos.  First time it's ever seen the light of day.  Of all the things to lose, I can't find the bolts that hold the gauges to the bracket and the left mirror mount is stripped (no mention of that in the auction  :-\)  I plan on blasting the cases tomorrow and my engine paint is on the way as well as the oil seals for the bottom end.  I plan on putting it into the frame with the top end off so I don't get everything scratched up...

edit:   oh crap, I need to do the brakes too...

Back to some painting.  I blasted some brake and engine parts.  One lesson learned was to make sure everything is 100% degreased.  I used POR-15's aluminum engine enamel.  I used a brush but I got brush strokes in it.  Wouldn't look bad from 15-20 feet but I'm going to sand it and try to do a better job by spraying it.  Seals and stuff supposed to arrive today...

Scott, thanks for following.  I'm definitely happy with the brake caliper I (almost) finished and I sanded and sprayed the oil pan and filter housing.  It doesn't say much, but it's probably my best painting yet.  I plan on giving the engine a good once over for sand tomorrow again and hopefully painting it...

Yes, that is much better, you have to be happy with that. You are probably better at it then I am.. I have only ever done rattle can paint jobs.. However for Christmas I did get an air compressor, not a big one but it should be good enough for small paint jobs.. At least I hope so.
