Need advice on Fuel tank and covers price.
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:58:28 AM »
I purchased a rebuilt 1971 CB750 engine punched out to 836cc yesterday (needed more power!!) and with the engine came a whole mess of CB750K parts including an original 1971 Fuel Tank metal flake yellow with black stripe, matching side covers with Emblems and painted fork Head Light holders. Likewise, I have the exact same for 1977 CB750K but the tank is metal flake black cherry. My buddy says people pursuing an original path with their 750K Hondas would be interested in these? I'm personally going the Cafe route and probably would be interested in passing these on to someone else.

Any idea what this stuff is worth? I looked on eBay and Craigslist around but I didn't see anything to judge prices on.

I can get pictures probably later today if that's helpful.
Thanks!

I may be interested in the '77 tank if in very good cond and no rust inside. Please post or email photos.
There are 77-78 tanks on ebay, but are in fair cond and priced at $50 or so:

That link you sent kinda shocked me because this tank is mint compared to that. Actually, it's in pretty good shape with just one scratch on the top of the tank; probably could be buffed out. I don't know about the inside because it was full of gas when it was handed to me!@#!. I understand the bike it came off of was running in June of this year so I imagine its not rusty at all? The 77 side covers and emblems are really nice. I took some photos of everything this evening to help aid the pricing advice but the pictures are not the best. The 71 tank and covers are REALLY dusty but you can see my porch lite shining in the paint on some of them. The 77 stuff is dusty too but no where near the 71. The 71 tank has some scratches and a super smail ding and the lock doesn't work. I'm sure the ding could be PDR'ed out but anyways. THANKS for the assistance!!! I can do better pictures but not until next weekend. Happy to work with anyone that's interested in them; however, MODS please let me know if I'm breaking any rules posting here????

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I think I got $300 or so for my K1 tank a couple years ago.  Can't remember how much the sode covers went for, but they got snatched up in a hurry for a pretty penny!  K1 stuff is valuable!  Good for you - it will help fund your cafe conversion.
It took 10 years but she's finally done!

Clean up the K1 parts some and took more pictures of the 71 and 78 tank and covers. The 1971 tank is in REALLY good shape. I conclude it has some light fading on the black stripes, one scratch on the front left side and one pea sized ding just below the scratch. Inside the tank is very light rust. and the latch is just missing the chorme key hole cover but locks fine and opens with a screwdriver. Likewise, the covers are in REALLY good shape with the exception of what appears to have been a removed sticker on the oil tank cover but the paint is REALLY good and the tabs and emblems are all there. sticker might clean up.

These are 1978 (Not 1977) Tank and Covers after a quick wash. These items are in great to excellent condition with just a few scratches (nothing deep) on the tank. Looks like the tank paint was buffed away by the seat but appears to be just affecting the clear. Covers are basically perfect.

I have an idea on prices but I'm interested to hear everyones take before officially list them.

Because they are making repops out injected molded plastic, and the originals are constructed out of something a little bit different.  Trust me with original side covers you can repair them with epoxy or even plastic weld them.  The repops when they break they break and can not be repaired very easily.  Trust me I know.  I broke one on my 500.  Went out and rode without a side cover for a while until David Silver had some in stock.  My take is $70 to $80 a piece in good condition.  That means no cracks, no repairs and all tabs must be intact.  Recently just to prove a point that this stuff is a lot harder to find I went out and smashed with a hammer a 1980 CB750F sidecover at a swap meet in front of a gentleman who told me it was only worth $5.00.   Of course I gave him the pieces and said, "Now it is worth $5.00."

The Frankenbike covers are good and I'm happy to say I just purchased a set before I got these. :O)

Thanks everyone. Looking forward to listing them in the for sale section and maybe eBay. BTW: I have a lot of other parts too. Tool Kits, Exhaust Flanges, MAC Drag Pipes (new), Carbs and filters, seats etc. I think these parts have been easier to track down pricing for than the tank and covers.

I have never purchased them before but I probably will if I ever break another side cover.  But just some fair warning to everyone.  Because I was involved with the motorcycle industry for a few years I got to meet some very interesting people.  One of the people I did get to meet was someone from Honda.  At the time I was interested in making reproduction air filters for the Honda CA77 and CA95, and the Suzuki Triples.   So I asked if I did this would I run into a problems from Honda.  His response was to me was no, but they will be watching my business.  It seems that Honda does take notice when someone is making copies of their products.  However they will not go after anyone for making them.  Instead they will just do what they did to David Silver.  Issue a press release saying that the certain items are now being produced.   My personal feelings on this is that it sucks.  But then they did learn a few things by watching Harley.
