78 Carb Question ??
« on: November 14, 2010, 03:41:35 PM »
Guys , My bike is all back together and running great but there is a vacuum tube or maybe a vent tube from my carbs that I really cannot find a place where it goes so there is a screw in it for now. MRieck told me to ask U guys your thoughts on the possibility of maybe a P.O. either changing the original petcock or if these carbs even belong on this bike. The reason for my question is I am having a cold start problem. Please advise & Thank You very much !!! Tim

That small tube is a vent tube it should be open and you can strap it above the top of the carbs. If they pd42b's with the keyhole top cover. Is this a (K) model?

Yup, probably the vent tube. Route a line like ^ said.

For the cold start problem - did you adjust the fast idle on the choke?  Also: I have found that pumping the throttle a couple of times before hitting  the starter to squirt a little extra fuel helps stoke the fires as well.

My K8 PD carb vent tube has a small screen filter plugged into it, to prevent particles from getting drawn down the tube? I think that is original (the way they came from Honda).

Originally there is no screen in the carb vent tube. It would have to be a pretty small screen...The factory set-up had the vent tube attached to the top of the air cleaner by a clamp/bracket and hanging down behind it.

For cold start problems check that your choke is closing completely. There is fast idle cam, but that only comes into play after the motor starts.

Hey BobbyR: After a rebuild I had hard starting problems with the fast idle set too high -4500 RPMs  :o  - and I propose that with the slides open too far it changes the fuel/air mix too much and causes hard starts.  What do you think?
