CB400f Varnish Blue paint formula
« on: November 15, 2010, 11:02:01 AM »
I just had my OEM CB400F tank scanned and paint mixed to match the original Honda Varnish Blue.

I could not find the formula easily on the web so here are the paint codes:
1975 CB400 F cafes, 1974 CB750 K4 Cafe, 1966/1976 Triumph/ Norton Triton Cafe and 1962 DBD34 BSA Gold Star Clubman.

Have you finished the spray job ? How did it come it - close to original I hope.

Thanks for code - I'll be needing paint for mine in a month or two.

Regards
Richard Perth.

I will paint early next week and post my results. I dipped a test strip in the can, let it dry and it looks really good.

Here is a test patch of Varnish Blue I sprayed. I'll post a photo of the tank after clearcoat. Looks very, very close to the OEM color.

You can order acrylic off the Internet. It comes from German takes about a month. Did one of my tanks in it looks mint. Be sure to prime the tank with white primer

I know this is an old thread but where did you have this paint mixed? Do they have a web address or phone #?

I just carried this very formula down to a local guy on Saturday to have my tank sprayed and he recognized it as a European formula for DuPont automotive paints. Said he could use it though. You might call around to your local automotive paint suppliers and see what they say.

This is kicking my ass again, but my GoogleFu finally rose up to the challenge. And so I am going to post this for posterity, in the hopes it helps the next guy.

That swatch in the photo is aka a Toyota paint code # 8A1

And this site: http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplaym.cgi?dupont=N8218

...references that to several other companies' paint codes as follows:

Ditzler PPG: 15685

Dupont: N8218

And assuming my painter can reference that to a Sikkens code, I will post that too. And I will report back how close this looks, just as soon as we paint the darned thing :-).

Okay, but what's the paint code?  I did a lot of refinishing work in the autobody world and it's never "exactly" the same.  Maybe close enough that most people can't tell a difference, but I bet an experienced person who works in autobody could tell.

Well, I work as a painter and on this rare occasion, it is in fact so close you might use the word exactly.

If you want the paint code, I will look it up tomorrow.

4into1 sells the tank and side panel stickers.  That's where I got mine from.

Thanks, Menno.  I got my tank and side panels painted using the 8A1 Toyota code.  It was  a very good match based on overspray areas on the original side panels.
