Xbox360 cooling mod
« on: November 13, 2010, 03:26:22 PM »
My Xbox 360 crapped out months ago.  No RROD this time but I just wasn't getting any video.  A few weeks ago, I gambled and did the wet towel trick.  My video came back but I figured it was on borrowed time at this point.  Today, I got it apart and blew the dust out that had accumulated on the CPU heat sink.  I had an old CPU fan laying around that I ziptied to the front of the heat sink.  I decided against wiring the fan inside the console and just connected it to an old 12VDC power supply I had around.  Now the Xbox has two plugs  ::)  I also dremeled the metal grill out of the back but left the case alone.  My kids have been playing for about 30 minutes now.  Here's hoping...

I have a bad feeling that those zip ties/fan casings are gonna melt, even with that cooling fan right up next to to the heat sink.  That sucker gets HOT HOT HOT!  I've had to repair my girlfriend's xbox from the RROD and it suggests you "cook" it for a few minutes after re-assembling the motherboard by letting it overheat...  It takes a few minutes to get to the "overheating" 2-red ring status and it was too hot to touch long before those 2 red lights started flashing...

I've got to do something like that with my PS3.
It's in an entertainment center and I have to leave the glass doors open when it's on.
Damn thing could cook eggs on the case!

I thin they make an attachment with fans and stuff, but I'm cheap and figure I can rig my own.
