quick advice on 'rebuilding' the headlight handlebar switch?
« on: November 16, 2010, 10:48:01 AM »
I did a couple forum search's but didnt really find anything,

I am sure its the switch itself as the low beam works fine but when you flip it up to the highbeam the only way to get it to stay on is to keep a little sideways pressure on the switch... which basically means I cant use my high beam while ridding (living in the city this hasnt been too much of a problem yet).

I am afraid of a bunch of little springs etc.. jumping out at me when I open up the housing,  .. I did look through the service manual and couldnt find an exploded view of the controls but maybe its there (i guess they assume you would just replace the whole thing). Thanks for the help!

they are kind of a pain, especially going into it blind. the only thing you really need to watch out for (that i know of from my experience) is a couple ball bearings, small suckers too. the spring isnt under much pressure,  just take your time, take pictures and be gentle. might just need the contacts cleaned. oh i also recommend disassembling over a fluffly towel so as not to have the little ball roll away on ya.

what bike is this for? I just had my 550's apart and re soldered the hi and low beam switch. Sounds to me like the wires on that switch are loose. You can take the switch housing apart without anything jumping out at you and it is very easy to get to that switch. Just one screw hold it in.

Its actually a very simple mechanism, mine did the same thing. I took it apart and slid a piece of credit card against the wall of the housing to push the connections together, works great.
