This may have been posted already but I just saw it for the first time.  If it is true it makes you wonder if it was one of our members?  :o    Unreal really.

Gasoline down the toilet? A lit cig? I doubt it. It's not the gasoline that ignites, it's the fumes. If the fumes were bad enough to light you can't tell me this guy wouldn't smell it. I mean he seems dumb enough but c'mon. I haven't checked Snopes.com but something tells me....

Also he wasn't working on a 76 CB 550, they have neutral safety switch for such an instance as starting your bike inside your house.

What a load of bollocks. You can’t ignite gasoline with a cigarette. Especially when the gasoline has been diluted in the toilet bowl. I learned this when my stepdad (mechanic) poured gas into a small can, placed it on the shop floor and continued to toss lit cigarettes into it. Nothing but extinguished butts.

While not outright false, the story has been around in various versions for many years. The implication is ... unsubstantiated legend.

I second that.

Hi Jimmy, yes you CAN ignite petrol with a cigarette.........A long time ago..{here we go.. ;D} we had a rather unsavoury guy that lived across the road and down a little, he was always abusing us for any and everything, he was just a cranky old prick.....Anyway one night we decided to siphon some fuel from his old Bedford truck he used to park on the street. We siphoned the fuel into a 100 litre garbage bin we had, we put the bin, full of fuel, onto the trunk of my old V8 falcon {ford} and proceeded to siphon the fuel  into my car. My mate {also Mick} was smoking a cigarette and flicked it and it hit the side of the car and the fuel fumes ignited, this was 2 in the morning and we had a 10 foot flame shooting out of my fuel tank. Mick, in all his infinite wisdom, punched the bin to get it out of the way, in doing so we ended up with a wall of flames that not only woke up his Mother but it lit up the street as well, chaos ensued. While all this was happening i managed to throw a blanket over the fuel filler on my car and the flames went out........A cigarette will certainly ignite fuel fumes, fuel fumes are heavier than the air around them so even if there was only a small quantity of fuel in that toilet, if there was enough time for it to settle, the smell would have been minimal and it could have ignited, either way it is a funny story....

If all that wasn't bad enough, i had a mate {bill} who was asleep in the back seat, originally we had the bin with the fuel in it sitting on a 44 gallon drum but it wasn't high enough.  Well when Bill woke in the middle of all the commotion he dived out of the back seat and head first into the 44 gallon drum.... ;D
Wish we had it on film, it would have been priceless...... :P
