Buying just Jets or Kits
« on: March 14, 2006, 08:22:36 PM »
Guys:

So I'm looking to acquire a few various sizes of jets so I can try these new pipes.  There seems to be some places where you can just buy the piece parts and then there are "kits" like the ones from DynoJet.

Has anyone gone the DynoJet route?  What does this do for me that I won't get if I just replace the mains I have now?

Also, I was checking out motorcyclecarbs.com and this link:

http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/Default_W43.cfm

Do you think this could apply to most carbs?  I've got Keihin and they are talking Mikuni I think.

I presume the same applies to keihin carbs, at least it gives you a starting point. I haven't got to this stage of my build but I sure am intersted in other peoples ideas.

Zeke-  What bike do you have?I don't think I have seen a Dynojet "kit" for any of the SOHCs (maybe the 650?)  Most of these seem to be for the more modern CV carbed bikes and they are typcially tailored to a specific exhaust or intake or combination of the two. . . . .  One thing to keep in mind is that your main jet is only part of the equation when it comes to tuning your carbs.  How much time do you spend with your throttle 2/3 of the way open or more?  This is where the main is coming into effect.  What happened to setting your idle mix for max rpm (or swapping idle jets if they aren't big or small enough [settlings of less than 1/2 turn out or more than 3 turns out are no good]),  and adjusting your main jet needle position?  Mild changes to the the exhaust/intake may not require much changes in the carbs and maybe just swapping only the main jet will be enough to make you happy but you may have to dig deeper to get the most from your mods.

My bike is an 80 cb650c.

I think some of the info regarding availability of those dynojet kits is wrong.  One site said a dynojet kit would fit 80 and 81, but the 1981 had the CV carbs, mine doesn't.

Not sure if it's a big deal or not, I'm just curious what is available to me.  If there was a needle other than stock developed to eliminate the 4-1 flat spots I've read about, I'd be interested to hear about it.

Anyone?

As far as picking jet size -- From that link:

Using a 4 to 1, up 2 jet sizes
Using a K&N with stock airbox, up 1 jet size.

I have 95 mains.  If I read correctly, next size is a 98, then 105, then 110.  So by this logic, I need to try 110 mains and go up one pilot size.

If I try pods, I need to go up one more, which is a 115......

What do y'all think?  Anyone know what size is the stock pilot jet?  Don't really want to mess with them until I get the new ones.....

Thanks,

Zeke

take a close up pic of the jets you need so i can compare to my selection and i may just have what you need.

order a patch or pin or a few of each and for a coupla bucks each i'd be happy to share my jet wealth (if i have the correct size of course) and throw them in with the shipment.

granted, you don't have to get a patch OR a pin... but, why wouldn't you?  (i haven't checked to see if you ordered any btw)

CB 400, 500, 550 have press in jets which were difficult to find when bikes were new. I make my own now ( but I did train as a precision machinist) Hardest part is finding drills the correct size. At least the Kei-Hin jet sizes are the hole size in mm so its not impossible to do ( mikuni measure flow rate in cc/min,same as AMAL,  dont remember the head of fuel )

Sounds good Heffay.  I didn't even realize we had such a thing as pins and patches.  It's been a long winter  :P

This weekend I'm gonna go thru my pics and manuals to see if I have a pic of them.

I think they are this for PD carbs:

http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/Keihin_Main_Jet_99101-357_C77.cfm?UserID=98648&jsessionid=7e302721981142609820667

I know for a fact that they have a hex head, as I have removed them before, but I seem to recall they had a female thread, and the one's in the picture from this link are male.  I'm trying to avoid taking mine out till I'm ready because it's a pain in the ass.

I'm hoping to have my target size plus two on each side so that I can get it totally dialed in.

Anyone know where I can buy needle shims for these 650 carbs?  (no clips here, honda bowed to pressure to make the carbs as UNadjustable as possible for environmental reasons....)

out

hey zeke... i have 50 spare jets of that style but, would you believe i only have 2-110s  all the others are between 142 and 190

if you think you might want the 110's just let me know.  (they are threaded normally... you might check on that too, i've never experienced reverse threaded jets)

I went to ACE hardware and got a bunch of #4 nylon washers and stacked 3 under each needle on my 78 cb750f supersport. I just added pods and it was very lean on the low side. Runs great now. Still trying the get the mains dialed in.
The thing about common sense is that, it's not that common.

Crazypj, you got any pics of those Home made jets? Was thinking on making some, I was going to use reamers for the last hole pass.
