Where to find 069A carb jets size 105 for 77 CB550F?
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:57:28 PM »
Hey all,

Thanks in advance for your help.   I am putting together and pretty funky bobber.   In the early stages and just trying to gather appropriate supplies for the rebuild.

It's a 1977 CB550F, has 069A  Keihin carbs and will have a complete Jardine 4-1 exhaust including the stock muffler.  NOS from 1973!

Also, gonna run Pods.. (which ones?  don't know yet so open to suggestions or links to good ones that'll fit)

Best guess from a reputable source here on SOHC... (thanks!!)  is that 105 jet mains and a different needle setting will be necessary.

Anyone know where I can order the 105 jet mains for the 069A Keihin carbs?

Already purchased OEM Honda carb gasket kits.

Again, thanks!!

Z1 carries sudco parts and is much easier to deal with.

Sirius Consolidated Inc is good too

Didn't find them on the Z1 site.  Sent them an inquiry.

And now an email to Sirius.

They have a jet kit but sizes 110-120.    A bit large for my application.  Hopefully they will have some smaller.

Anyone know other sources?   Just in case.

thanks,
Mark

I ordered a set of 105's for my PD46A carbs yesterday from jetsrus.com, they ran thirty bucks for the set with shipping, and I got notification that they went out in the mail last night.  As close as I could tell they have any jet you might want, easy to order, you can pay via Pay Pal too.  Very fast, very easy.

Sirius Consolidated was recommended above along with Z1.

Huge difference in price between the two.   Z1 wanted about $4.50 each and didn't have them in stock but could get them for that price.

I contacted Sirius and they are sending me 16 !!!!  jets with shipping for $49.00.    Thats 4 of each of the following:  100,105,110 and 115 !!!  (For my 069s press fits)  WOW!!   I hope they aren't garbage cuz the price was right!!!

You will get lots of advise on jetting and you can take mine with a gain of salt just like everyone else's, but what I have found on a 550 with a 4 in to 1 and some head and ignition work, 105's won't be enough.

these carbs need a lot of jetting, with no restriction on the filter side they just don't draw fuel out of the bowl on just air flow. I am currently at 115 with the clip on the needle in the top notch. It is very smooth acrossed the RPM range till about 8500 where it starts to lean out and loose power.

I am getting nice sandy brown plug chops mid and high I little dark at idol but I am only getting 35 MPG

The push in mains are fairly easy to find.  What about the idle jets?  Anyone know if the ones offered on Sirius' website are correct?  I ordered from jets r us, only to find out I would have to modify them to fit  >:( , ie saw the ends off.

Raef,

Thanks for the info.   Mine will be similar in some ways to yours but no headwork and guessing my exhaust is a bit more restrictive maybe.

My plans for the  CB550F are as follows:

4-1 Jardine complete exhaust including original muffler
Dyna S ignition
Will have air pods (just don't know which ones yet)

Regarding carbs:  was going to start with the 105 mains, and needle 4th from the top

Hoping I will at least be in the ballpark for starters.

just a guess, i would say it will be rich on idol with a flat spot low to mid range coming back in mid to high.

the clip setting has more impact at lower RPM becoming less important the more you twist the throttle. It seems you can gain + or - a jet size at mid range with the clip settings.

Ah, good info to know Raef !

Given your experience with the 550, should the needle position be different than suggested to lessen the low-mid range flat spot or is that altered by a different setting?

I never could get it to run smoothly with pods using jets other people say should work. I found going bigger jets lower needle heights to work better for me.

I have done some really crude testing with a shop vac and is seems these carbs need the resistance of the stock air box and filter to create negative pressure to "suck" the fuel out of the bowls. Simple air flow is not enough unless you really increase the size of the jets. Many say this is wrong but it works for me and I rode this bike almost 600 miles in one weekend about a month ago.

Mark  (from another Mark   ;D  )

Did you go back to the stock airbox?

its not stock, no top on the box with a deflector and a homemade 3/4" foam filter.

I think the current set up would work with pods but this bike is all stock less engine mods.

current project will be very minimalistic with pods no side covers

Mine is gutted.   I'm chopping / hacksawing and minimalizing everything!!  This is my experiment in letting go and seeing what my demented mind can come up with.    :o

Sorry Mark, I had to laugh at that one.  I'm sure a vac is probably providing suction well enough to simulate the motor gulping in air, but it just sounds hokey when you say it out loud.   Good idea though, maybe you could rig an apparatus to vary the amount of air being pulled through the carb throat to really get some good results.

Has anyone ever put some kind of restrictor in the carb throat to try and negate the pressure loss experienced by tossing the airbox?  Would probably hurt the top end, but it would be cool to see the results.

I have ran with varying degrees of choke with pretty good results, I have also looked at a vacuum operated air scope.

One of the draw backs of the vac experiments is I have never really tried to do the math on just how much a 550 can flow at what rpm's. i drilled holes in the shop vac to carb adapter to reduce pressure, to increase flow you just added tape to a hole or two.

low budget research at its finest :D
