Chain lube...and the use thereof
« on: March 15, 2006, 12:25:07 AM »
The question is/are...

1.  What kind of chain lube do you guys use?
2.  How often do you use it?
3.  Do you use it sparingly in one spot and let the rotation lube the whole chain or
douse the whole chain, or remove the chain and soak it, or ???

I have been using a foam type and spraying the whole chain on the bike as I hand
rotate it, but this results in some drippage (is that a word   ;D )  I'm trying to keep
from soaking the whole back of the bike and the pipes.

There are alot of posts on this subject and many different ways to go about it.I would say the important thing is to do it frequently and keep the slack in check. If you neglect chain maintenence, you risk alot more than just the cost of a new chain.

Wurth High Perf Dry Chain Lube - goes on like a wax, doesn't fling off.

Most of the spray can lubes go on with a thin vehicle which evaporates leaving behind the heavier lube. Just make sure you get it between the side plates on both sides and into the roller ends. When I finish, and it's had a chance to set-up, I wipe he excess off the outside with a rag. Too much lube on the outside merely collects dirt and sand and contributes nothing to the lubing of the chain. Inevitably it will collect dirt/sand anyway. Periodically you should give it a cleaning. I use kerosene and one of those three sided brushes you can pick-up at any motorcycle shop, then dry it with rags and re-lube. Check the polls area to see how frequently folks lube theirs. Once per year, say at the end of the season (unless you are lucky enough to live someplace where you can ride year-round) it's a good idea to remove the front sprocket cover and inspect/clean the area around the sprocket. It can collect a surprising amount of sand and dirt and build-up over time.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I posted about Wurth products a while back. I went to my local Yamaha dealer to get some Yamaha Carb Cleaner which everyone reckons is the best: "Nah mate - we use Wurth cleaner here" !  I emailed Wurth from their website about which of their products to use - no reply.

I've been using PJ1, but we recently got some synthetic stuff that looks interesting.  I lay newspaper under the chain, and hold another piece behind where I'm applying it.  I use it every couple hundred miles.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I took the bike completely apart to the frame and reassembled it.  Its
funny but as I am riding it I always have this tiny fear that a wheel is
going to fall off or something because I didn't torque it right. :o

I have the same thoughts about the chain breaking....hence the lube
question.
