Okay to use this piston?
« on: November 17, 2010, 07:42:38 AM »
So awhile back here I blowed up a piston by running to lean or a nut coming into the cylinder or the posibilites are endless. I got a replacement piston from a friend who had some spares lying around and out of the four he had this one had the best wear readouts. Crapload of carbon buildup though. After taking some Simple Green and a brass brush i find a bunch of striations. Still okay to use or do I steal another one from him?

Appologies for the crap photos, but I'm going to dump money into the bike before a camera.

My bone stock, un-molested factory motor had the "sanding" (?) striations across the top of every piston. Unless I am on dope, that is totally normal.

It was strange compairing it to my other 3 pistons which didn't have anything like that at all, just the standard center circle.  Thanks for the clairfication. Looks like its going in the bike.

Your bike, your decision but that ain't normal.  Not heavy striations like that anyway.

Take a tour of some of the bikes in the "Projects" sections some of them have real good pics of what the pistons should look like.

Sides are fine, no cracks, checked the tolerance between the rings, fine as well, at some point the donor engine was running really hot I was told. Its the same height as all the others so who knows. I'll have some local experts check it out tonight and see what they say
