Barn Find
« on: November 06, 2010, 08:42:43 PM »
A buddy of mine was cleaning out a horse stall for his landlord and lo and behold there were two motorcycles there that  I was able to haul off...both for free.
One was a CB750K4. It has a seized engine, probably the left cylinder and is missing quite a few parts, probably due to the last owner trying to troubleshoot the problem and then giving up and discarding the parts. The bike was last registered in 1980 and has 12,000 miles on the clock.
I am trying to get title and would like to restore the bike. Basically it is missing the exhaust system, engine side covers, shift lever, kick starter and a few other bits in the side case area. Donor parts would be appreciated. Here is a picture of the bike just after we pulled it out of the pile of rubble: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12999766/CB750K4Barnfind.JPG
Basically all it needs is a few engine parts. If you have a '74 donor bike or know someone that does, let me know.

 Welcome to Sohc4.
Where are you? What was the other bike? 57 Vincent?
Whats your plans with it? Cafe restore? Is the title a hassle where you are?
It looks like a good find to me!

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Welcome!  Nice find, where are you?

Search "stuck motor", it may not be seized, the piston rings may be rusted to cyl.

It looks nice!

To answer some earlier posts, I am in Thousand Oaks, California.I have restored several bikes in the past. Here is the last one I did, a '71 Norton Commando: http://hubpages.com/hub/Norton-Commando-Restoration
The other barn find bike is a Yamaha dirtbike @'74. A buddy told me he thinks it is a 360 that has had a lot of race mods done to it. The VIN is DT1-XXXX but I don't think it is a DT1. Wrong tank for sure. It does turn over, so this may be a runner.
As far as the seized engine goes, I have sprayed carb clearner and WD-40 in the plug holes. No help there. It is definitely in neutral.I have been trying to turn it over using the alternator bolt on the left side of the engine.
I have no Idea who the previous owner was. I am going through the process to get the title. Basically, it is called a lean sale. You apply to DMV for names of previous owners and then DMV requires that you send them a certified letter. They have to come up with the cost for my hauling and storage if they want the bike back. It hasn't been registered for thirty years, so the chances are that whatever address DMV has on record, if there records go back that far, is wrong. After 31 days, if I can show DMV that there was no response, the bike is mine.

That is how titles worked in Indiana until last year.  Now it is court ordered title, or none at all.  Get that bike titled in your name asap.  You never know when the wind may change in Ca.

Try ATF/acetone 50/50 in the cyl's to "unstick" it. Let it set for 3 days and then rock it back in forth in 3rd gear.
This worked for me recently.

Good Luck

When I was still in school I used to clean stalls at a couple of stables as a part time job.  Only thing I ever found was a bunch of manure!  >:(

Good find.  Looks to be in fairly good condition.

actually you can get past the lien sale b.s. in CA if you can "get" a bill of sale. which only needs to consist of " I *name* sold *said bike* with a vin # of.... to *name* for $10." add 2 signatures at the bottom and BAM.... titled  ;D worked for me 4 or 5 times now.
