I'd look for a 78 CB550, and then look into a different tank, the stock tanks are WIDE, way more chopper than cafe. But the 78's have the better carbs and short intake runners.
Did find a CB500 for $100, no title or front end, engine seized maybe. Tempting but I want one that runs. I was thinking of cutting the stock tank where your knees go. But is there a better bike tank you can use as a starter to cut up? Prefer to make my own than buy a done one.

With some massaging of the tunnel and a touch of grinder work to get the "c" tabs off a stock CB400F tank will fit on the early model frame and looks great! IMHO No bashing nescecary. That was the directon I was going in until I got my hands on a Rickman tank. Oh and the classic tank mod... A Cb500T tank looks awesome on these bikes, a friend of mine has done this. Again just a bit of massaging of the underside with a hammer, looks great, already has cutouts and still holds more gas than a stock 500Four tank.
