If you go through the work to relace the hoops, it would probably be better to bite the bullet and get non-pitted rims and have them stripped/coated by a pro. I have removed chrome with aluminum oxide (120 mesh) at 70 PSI, but it was real work.

Scuffing and painting will work, but if you relace, you are already in for a penny.....

All it takes is one boob at your MC shop to mount your tire and wreck your paintjob, a true powdercoat, if done properly is very durable.

If you don't relace, then go ahead and rattle the thing, but rims (steel) in good/great shape are pretty easy to get around here.

I got a set of CB550 hoops damn near perfect just collecting dust, as does just about everyone on this forum.

If you try to just skuff it, or paint it by any other method really, it will just continue to pock and peel.  I've been considering the same problem, and I really haven't decided how to go.  I could (mine problem is with the rear) buy a 16" rim and chrome spokes and just lace it onto my hub, cost, about $100.  I could buy a new set of spokes and have my existing rim blasted and powder coated which would look nice and cost me right around $140 as best I can estimate.  A new rim and new spokes, both in chrome, would run around $200.  A very nice used wheel from E-Bay can probably be had for less than $100 with a week or two of diligent search.

So, what do you do?

powder coating does seem the way to go but first thing first would be stripping the rim.  where is a good place to find a good used hoop?

I had my set acid dipped, blasted, relaced with new spokes.

29.00 x 2 for spokes and nipples
45 x 2 for powdercoat
50 x 2 for labor (included dis-assembly and reassembly with true)

248 isn't bad imo. look great now too!

Got the spokes from partsnmore.com it appears they have raised their price to 30. They are for the 750. The front worked for me, the rears did not. I ended up getting the rear spokes off feebay for 29 too and sold my rear 750 spokes there for 35 or so.

Who would do acid dipping? The powder coating guy?

It was his powdercoater who did the acid dipping I believe. It makes it easier for him to blast things to be coated.  A guy had an add on craigslist with a bunch of pics of wheels he restores and sells, and said he mounts balances too. I called him up and told him what I wanted and we talked prices. He showed me some wheels he has done when I dropped mine off...all looked great...mostly harley and chopper wheels. He sends the wheels out to his pc in batches and it keeps costs down.

It took about a month or so but was well worth the wait. I got the new bearings in (put them in the freezer the day before you install...really makes it easy) and I am hopefully getting everything together in the next week or two.
