Garage find... In my own garage. 1965 Simplex Senior Sportsman
« on: November 18, 2010, 05:55:13 PM »
When I grew up, there was this old goofy looking moped with what looked like a horizontal shaft lawn mower engine bolted into it.  I never thought much of it.  Once when I was back home over the years, I started taking it apart.  I remembered the tank said "Simplex Sportsman."  Back in the day when I was a kid I had the thought that it was an old Harley Sportster somehow.  Completely forgot about it over the years.  Something triggered my memory just a few minutes ago and I got to looking it up.  I found it.  1965 Simplex Senior Sportsman:  http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1965-simplex-senior-sportsman-motorcycle-motorscooter  I hope I can dig up all the pieces when I get back up to Mom's house.....

Cool looking little ride! I hadn't seen this style in a looong time.

As kids, (always broke but dreaming) cousin and I used to drool over them, the Powell
P-81's and, of course, the Mustangs. The shop owner would ignore us for a few minutes and then run us out.

About '64 I bought my little brother a used Simplex scooter - more in the Doodlebug style - with a busted engine. (Cousin had a Doodlebug around '49.)

It had a Continental go-cart raceing engine. 'Needed a Rod and piston - both alloy (no crank damage). Finally found parts and gaskets in Atlanta.

The little rascal was "geared" low and turned lots of RPM. The little engine would really wind! It would sling gravel and hit about 40 mph in a flash - even with an adult on it. Cute, fun little scooter! 'Can't recall whatever went with it.
